Default Volovo sx drive exhaust question

Just bought me a beater for the summer. 1998 wellcraft, 3.0 volovo sx. When at idle in the driveway with the ears on it most of the exhaust water comes out just above the transome plug. The bellows is good to the lower unit and exaust comes the two holes at the top of the lower unit but not much water. Is this normal?

    Thanks

semi related question- anyone know if the only difference between the 4 cyl SX drives and the high torque (5.7 V8) SX drives is the gearing? can they be re-geared? I see a lot of deals on 'beater' 4 cyl SX drive bowriders around here, its tempting to pick one up cheap and slap in a smallblock. any idea if the bellhousing pattern on a 3.0 matches the SBC pattern from the 4.3, 5.0, and 5.7?
Seems like merc dealers are on every corner but I dont know of any volvo service/dealers around here.

Hi Not sure if you have the same drive that I do,, I believe mine is a 250 but the model number plate was removed from the drive before I got it.

what I found on mine was,,,,

the outlet you are referring to comes directly from the overflow (Thermostat housing) and dumps directly to that tube, the rest of the water that is coming from the exhaust is actually coming from the exhaust manifolds.

On my boat there was a valve in the bilge that could be used to restrict the amount of water coming through the engine, in theory I guess it is some way to increase the heat of the engine I'm thinking. Less flow through that valve = more flow through the engine and less through the bypass... More flow through the valve = less flow through the engine.
