mercruiser 260 msd upgrade
Just finished installing an msd ready to run distributer in my brothers boat. Changed out the coil and found the brown wire that goes to the tack and swapped it to the green wire from the dizzy. The other brown wire that goes to the shift switch gets grounded when shifting to reverse but there seems to be no drop in rpms. Both brown wires went to the neg. side of the coil. I am not sure if I am needing to wire something different or add something to get the rpms to drop when shifting into gear? Anyone have any ideas or have run into this before?
It's what we do
The rpms don't drop on a Merc when you shift INTO gear. It is a shift interrupt switch that kills the ignition for a split second when you shift OUT of gear. The switch on the shift bracket is only supposed to activate as the shift cable puts extra load on the shift lever causing the switch to quickly activate while pulling the lever out of gear. The dog clutch is tapered, so it holds the drive in gear and will be very hard to shift out of gear if it doesn't stumble the engine. Run the purple ignition wire (in the Merc loom) through the switch then to the 12 volt switched wire on the MSD.
