496 Ho = slow
496 Mag = slower

Go with a 525 atleast, should get you into the 70's.
Don't know on insurance.
Not sure about you but I've never had to beg my boat for a good time!
Speed for the Mag would probably be around 65mph and the HO should get you close to 70. Insurance should be less than $600 per year. Best insurance for this type of boat and power that I have found is Deborah in Lake Havasu.

Yeah i wish i could go bigger but its not in the budget. Plus im not looking to go fast. i thing the wife and 18 month old would would be good with 65 or 70. and thanks for the insurance infor. will be giveing her a call.

496mag in a nordic heat, for comparison, will barely break 60. My buddy has a 496 HO in a Ultra 28' and it barely breaks 60 also, although his boat is loaded pretty heavy. I say 65mph tops for the 496HO and low 60's for the MAG. My boat (28' cat) runs 67-68 with a 415hp 502...but its a closed bow and its a cat, so it packs air and is a little quicker on the top end. If you wanna break 60mph without wringing its neck, at least get the HO

just out of curiosity when you guys speculate top end on boats do you speculate it with a mid range prop? Like a 22" or 24" or do you think about it running a 26"? I've just always been curious to what others on this board think honest top end is
I would bet this boat would run the 24 pitch prop and top out at 65MPH.
I don't recall if this is a single or two-step hull. Mine is two-step and quite heavy. With an H-O, stock 24p B-1 prop, turbulators out and full-synthetics I can hit 68 on a decent day trimmed up on the back step. I have a 22p for real-heavy, real-hot days. A 26p would be pretty useless on boats of this weight with this power. Headers, synthetics, and an ECM re-tune would swing a 26p quite well - but you would be getting away from 87 octane.
In the real-world, on a 110 degree Havasu day, 4-6 adults, three ice chests, and full tanks; it's a solid 60mph boat. 4000 gives me around a 42mph cruise, which I am real happy with for a fully loaded cruiser of 30-feet. I see no reason for it to be any faster, as all of my passengers (one being the wife) don't ever want to go over 45 anyway. The only time I get to air it out onto the steps is on super-calm water or by myself. So, personally, I don't need a 75mph boat as I only rarely get to see the top speed I have now.
I pay right at $800/year for insurance with no lay-up.

Do yourself a huge favor and go with the 525 if you have that option. My Brother had one with the HO and he was lucky if he saw 58 on GPS. This Boat is lug and does take a while to get on plane. Boat was nice but definately needed more power. I drove it a few times so I knew what it was capable of.
thanks there arent any used with a 525 so i might be looking a different boats
