    Default New Paint Questions...

    Hello,

I did a quick search, but didn't find the info that I'm looking for...

I have a 17.5' v drive Hondo that is getting ready for paint. I have the motor and drive train out. I took it over to a paint shop and they quoted me 2k. That's me doing the prep (sanding and some minor glass repair) them doing primer and spraying.

Just looking for solid black. They are thinking 9qts @ $90 per qt. Seems like allot of paint and seems expensive too.

I told him I wanted it to be able to take a beating (using the boat for skiing) so we're going to be walking on the deck ALL the time.

    thoughts, suggestions?

Also any paint suggestions (base/clear) etc...

    thanks

I did my schiada using high quality high build primer , water base and low voc clear we use at our body shop. I have had some scratches and it always goes down to the gel.

If I was going all a solid colour I would concider using polyester gel coat. its way more durable and can easily be touched up and cut and polished. I priced it out and its cheaper than a high quality primer. about 120 bucks a gallon.

Thanks for the reply... I have no idea when it comes to gel coat.... Also time is an issue. In a perfect world, i'd take the time to learn the gel coat process and prep the boat for it, but I don't have the time to invest at the moment. I'd like to shoot it with a good paint that will hold up to "some" abuse. If it lasts for a couple of years, perhaps I can afford to re-do it again with gel when I have the time. I have a feeling the stringers will soon be up too, so a good winter of down time is around the corner.

I checked around here and I can get BASF (from the auto store) or the interlux stuff from the marine place. What one of these would you go with?
