Default Fine line and striping questions

I'm basing my entire boat in white because the orange I'm using is a tri stage and calls for a white base. After white is down how long before I put purple 3M fine line on top of it so I can paint the orange.
My other questions are Is the Purple 3M fine line ok to use?
Can I put regular masking tape on base coat (not to stripe with but to mask with)?
BTW the white is OMNI brand the orange I'm using is PPG the blue I'm using is also OMNI based

When I painted My boat I was told that the base had to be cleared within 12 hrs, Soit was sugested to spray the base the shoot a inter coat clear, then layout the graffics spray the next color then a other mid clear the final base and clear. It is best to tape on top of clear and not directly on top of the base. I am not familiar with purple fine line. I used blue fine line and masking tape. I am no expert by any means ,its just the way it was suggested to doit for mine.....Hal

If your not on the edge.......your taking up too much room......Drive it like you stole it!

This really comes down to experience. I've left bases open for days and never had issues with lifting of the clear. Base can be scuffed with 800 wet if your concerned with adhesion. One of the problems one may have with the method your describing is high mil thickness at the end. Chipping can become a problem with high mil thicknesses. Repairs can be a real pain as well.

Fine line is a good product. I preferred it over the traditional masking stripe tape. Some guys like the traditional, it's just a preference. The fine line always seemed to leave a crisper edge to me and less of a tendency to build up and lift on the edges. Depending on your temperature and reducer your using for your base you could start laying graphics in about an hour if your dialed in correctly. I've used a ton of omni bases and it's not to bad for the price. If you can swing it don't use the clear. Use ppg or something similar in quality. The omni clear doesn't have a very good uv holdout. At my elevation, a mile, chalking starts in as little as three years.

If you are going to edge the graphic with a pinline, then fineline is not necessary, just more money out.
In between colors you could use a midcoat clear, pretty much all paint brands will offer it.
I generally use PPG's Colorado blender or Jouse of Kolor's SG100/150, they all require a reducer for thinning same as Basecoat.

You will find all the info you need in tech bulletins on the Omni and PPG web sites or you can get them from your paint supplier. Use a high quality masking tape that will not bleed when painted over. DO NOT cut cost in this area or you will be sorry later. This tank would not look like this with cost cutting materials

OH by the way Omni is a product of PPG however some of the materials that are made under the Omni label are not compatible with some PPG products such as various clears or undercoats. PPG has a great techline for assistance with those kind of questions. It has been my experience over the past 37 years of custom painting it is not always good to intermix. If you can get the color on Omni you should be able to get it in PPG too. Just my 2 cents
