Default Paint help on Belmont Flattie

I'm getting ready to restore my dad's 69' Belmont flattie and have a few questions. I figured out that I have to fix the stress cracks that came back after painting by grinding them down with a dremel and refiling them with glass, then paint, the whole section to match. Problem we have is that after the boat was painted, some of the paint came off in large chunks off the bottom of the boat. Is there any special way to prep this area before applying the paint to prevent this from happening again?

Im no pro when it comes to painting over gel but if its pealin off in big chunks I would say you have to take all the paint off or your just going to have the same problem again. you may have to sand the gel with 180 and prime it then prep for paint. with out seeing it I would say it was prepped with to fine of grit and the paint is has nothin to stick to especaly the bottom were it takes all the beeting. I was talking to a guy about painting my boat and he told me that you have to sand gel with alot courser grit than you would on a car to make it stick. dont quot me on that because Im not sure its just what I was told from another guy. maybe try calling a boat shop and see what they say. good luck!!!
