Default Crack Repair Questions (pics included)

Got my project all stripped and am now working to get it all ready for paint. What is the best bet to fix these similar but different scenarios?

1- spider cracks. Not sure if they go through the gel or not. My intent was to grind a V into the areas, fill with resin and shredded glass, then blend. BUT I'm will to do what the pros tell me.

2- Holes in dash from previous owners. My intent was to tape bottom side, fill with resin and shredded glass, sand. Again, I'll do what I'm told.

3- CRACK. So this travels across the back, and then terminates at a hole where the chute pack bolts on. I'm really not sure what to do here

Also. Can I use epoxy resin, or does it need to be polyester?

I'm surprised some of the more knowledgeable people on here haven't replied to this yet. I'm not an expert by any means but I will give my two cents. First off, you can use epoxy but once you start using epoxy you are committed. Polyester wont stick to epoxy, but epoxy will stick to polyester. So if the boat was laid up using epoxy you must use epoxy. More than likely it was laid up using polyester. My advice would be to stick with polyester since that is what the boat is made from. For the smaller holes in the dash I would chamfer the tops of the holes to give the plug a little more bite. Then use the method you described of resin and shredded glass to fill the holes. Add enough so you aren't left with low spots and so that you can sand the repair flush. For the smaller non structural cracks I think you would be fine by just grinding a V into them and using the above method. For the deeper crack(s) that you described you may need to go a little further. Grind a deep V into the entire crack. Then grind down 1/32'' or so 1.5-2'' on each side of the crack. Then grind down 1/16'' or so 1'' on each side of the crack. Cut pieces of cloth that fit the ground out areas. Build the repair up high enough so you can sand it down flush. This will tie the two sides of the crack back together. More so than just grinding a V and filling, which may crack again. On your final coat of resin add wax to make the repair easier to sand. Like I said I'm no expert but I think that will point you in the right direction.

    Sideways,
i think u got it figured out for him. That is what I would have written to him too, and I agree on using polyester resin.
