    Default How Much Gel?

I'm getting ready to re-gel my Hondo. This will be my first time doing a full re-gel. Does anyone roughly know how many gallons of gel it will take to do an 18ft boat? Single solid color and a coat of clear? I don't want to run out and will buy what I need to not run out, but at the same time gel isn't cheap and I'd rather not have a bunch left over. Also, I'm guessing that I can add a product like duratech to the clear to help with orange peel and add some UV protection? Thanks!

I have sanded most of the hull down to bare glass because there were so many spider web cracks in the original gel. I'm guessing most of the cracking was because of the heavy flake that was in the original gel. I have made the necessary repairs regarding the cracking. I will be spraying poly primer soon and blocking everything flat. I was going to go with base coat, clear coat paint, but for durability reasons I would like to spray gel instead. I will be re-geling the entire hull. I know gel is more work, but I have nothing but time. Preferably black gel on the bottom and a shade of blue for the rest of the hull. Maybe black around the cap depending on how things go. I was hoping that some one who has experience with shooting gel could give me a ball park estimate on how many gallons of gel I will need to buy to cover a 16ft Hondo jet hull (I said 18ft in the first post for some safety margin). I'm stretching the budget already to get it done this summer so Im trying to avoid buying way more than I have to, but I will buy however much it takes to get it covered and be safe. Ive read a ton of posts regarding gel and I heard from one extreme to the other. One guy said he did his whole boat with one gallon. Another guy said to order ten. I just need a ballpark estimate so I can get it ordered and on its way. Here's what I'm working with. Comments and suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What Primer are you going to use and is it Duratec ? Just curious have you ever sprayed Gel before considering more is better ( lack of blow thru ) due to the fact that you hopefully will be blocking that out also going thru many grits ( stages of sanding ) before final buff which really is a whole lot of X-Tra work compared to shooting the boat with paint although yes ....... Gel is more durable and with that in mind i see an easy five gallons & then some for starters which in the long run will be cheaper purchasing five gallons or more at one time opposed to smaller amounts, and maybe doing the bottom first ............which should give you a general/ better idea of just how much Gel you really will need overall to complete the hull sides and deck . Question ~ what size tip are you going to be using on your gun ?

Thank you for the response Ginger. I'm going to use Duratec polyester primer. I have brushed on gel in bilge areas and such but I haven't sprayed it through a gun yet. I understand what you mean by blow through and getting enough gel on the boat so you don't sand through it. I think I'll order five gallons of neutral gel and the pigments to mix the colors I want. As you suggested starting on the bottom of the boat will help to gauge how much gel it really is going to take and help me get a feel for spraying it through a gun on areas that cant be seen. If there is a little gel left over I will use it on another project. I'm planning on using a 2.0 or 2.2 tip. Your input on that is appreciated. After the pigmented gel is sprayed and I have gone up through the grits sanding do I need to lay clear gel with UV protection additives over top of that? Then sand up through the grits again on the clear. Then final buff?? Thank you for your help!

First off I am still very old school when spraying gel, and would I recommend spraying clear over color - NO - unless you are going to be spraying metal flake although occasionally I have sprayed this product due to demand with good results but find it very pricey Duratec Clear Hi-Gloss Gel Coat Additive | Fibre Glast and to tell you the truth most likely after all is said and done ( boat is finished ) you will not be leaving the boat uncovered or out side for long periods of time maybe keeping it or storing it in the garage when not in use . Tips - personally when spraying gel depending on the project ( size ) I use tips that range from 2.5 - 2.8 or 3.0 for full size projects which in your case I would recommend a 2.5 for starters and what type of gun are you planning on using , gravity feed , pressure - gun /pot , or...................
