I have watched it done , Never have i partook --

laid down 1/4" masking , then laid 3/4 on top of that and firmly taped it to the 1/4 tape leaving the rest of the 3/4 tape not touching any part of the painting surface - then airbrush into the cavity ...... like i said no experience

another way of doing this is to lay your tape out (whatever width u like)overlaping an 1/8 or so the whole area u want coverd, shade off one side with airbrush peal up a peice of tape and do it agin and so on its a good look

Do you always have to use an airbrush..can you use a touch-up gun or because it's such a small project just spray can it..And do you have to let each line dry prior to removing the tape and then going on to the next stripe or can you just keep peeling the tape off and continue to spray..

One more important question..when you lay your tape out I assume you lay your tape out from the top down and then spary from the bottom up?

It is really quite simple, it is just overspray. You don't need an air brush, just a regular paint gun. The performance boat you pictured of Ray Martin's I did some touch up work on a painted several air scoops for. I wish I was closer to Idaho, I would come and show you.

For practice just lay down several pieces of 3/4 inch tape side by side. Turn your spray gun down and stay back from the surface. Aim a few inches below the edge of the tape and make a smooth easy pass. ( don't stop or you will get uneven shading. ) Next pull the first or top piece of tape and repeat the process.

Do you overlap the tape about 1/8 on top of the other tape...I assume you must overlap each line with tape..also do you need a special tape or just blue painters masking tape..is that correct..thanks

That's interesting. I bought that boat from Ray in 1997. Took it back to Ken Meyer at B&K in Bellflower, CA , the original painter of the boat in 1979, and had it repainted in the original scheme and colors in 1997. It hasn't been touched since. I'd be interested to hear what you know about the boat. Please pm me with whatever info you would like to share, especially the scoops you painted. Steve Speck

i have done the fading look your wanting and RIVER has it exactly like it is. what i add is a piece of masking paper and tape to cover what ive already done so your over spray for the next does not continue to darken your previous line.

Explain how you add an extra piece of masking paper so you don't over spray..you would have to wait for each line to dry prior to covering up the work you just completed?
