    Default mold in balsa floor??

Last fall layed a balsa floor in my flatbottom. Just the bottom layer so top was not resin'd. Due to unforeseen events the boat had to come outside for a bit. Well, it sat too long and got some what appers to be mold in the balsa in spots. Looks like some water got thru my boat cover.. Anyone have any ideas to get the mold out. If not, I will tear floor up and srtart again
    Thanks

Inthecurl , could you post some some pics and in in your opinion has the balsa started to deteriorate (rot) from getting wet and if so it should be replaced . Inthecurl , welcome to the board .

Like any wood it absorbs water, put a fan on it for a few days, it should dry rather quickly. Once dry, scrap off the mold, and sand off any stains. It must be totally dry to do this, or it will just smear.

The balsa has not yet started to deteriorate, just visually does not look that pleasing. I have it setting out in the sun in the day with a fan and it is seeming to help, just didn't know if anyone knew any chemicals that could speed up the process... Structurally it is in good shape as most of the resin soaked thru to the top of the balsa, I'm just talking the top 1/16-1/32 of an inch or so that has some darkening. If I cannot get it to look prefect again, I may do a veneer covering with matt/glass etc...

Here is what I'm working with. If I cannot get the darkening out, like I said, I wll veneer over it, just want to make sure I can still keep all the strength and the balsa/resin will adhere to my next coat.

Inthecurl , to tell you the truth it really does not look that bad and just maybe with a little sanding like Sleekcrafter , mentioned you just might be good to go , and have a safe , and happy weekend .

Just a thought; You may want to look up and call a WATER RESTORATION COMPANY that has expertise in wood floor restorations in homes. They have some pretty good processes now that they use to "repair" and restore all types of water flooded wood flooring.

Good luck with that, lot of work to redo it all over again.

Inthcurl, if you are thinking of calling in a Water Restoration Co , like PTC , recomended ........................you might as well tear the whole frickin core out again , and start over , and the reason being is........................ you have Balsa Core that has mold on the surface .. which is.............. a far cry from being a hardwood floor .

Well, I wiped down the floor with some bleach and borax, let dry and then sanded with 36 grit. Mold was only in about 64th of an inch. Came right up and is liveable!!! Did one side today and put some resin on to seal protect and tomorrow other side.
