you can cut 2 perfect circles out of plywood the thickness of the transom & glass them in place & then put a piece of cloth w/resin on the inside overlapping the pieces/circles...works excellent & alot of members have done it this way just sayin' my .02 cents

That is the best way to do the repair, remember if you do this don't make the wood too tight, it is a filler not a plug. If you have or can get soem fiberglass dust and mix with resin to create a putty or slurry, this works great to glue the filler piece in prior to glassing over. I use the slury on all kinds of stuff, tuff a heck.

Cabosil mixed with resin makes a very good putty which has been used since they have been building fiberglass boats, and fiberglass dust like Sanger-Spectra mentioned is called Milled Fiber which is a milled fiberglass powder . Hey guy's , not to be rude but there is no mention of glassing both sides of the cut outs .....only the back...... which down the road may end up being a problem or should i say an eye sore....... due to shrinkage from heat , ect , ect .

so cut my filler pieces so they just slide in by hand not driven in,coat edges of hole and filler with milled fiber slury prior to putting them in, fill grooves with slury/putty,sand flat tapering into existing glass on both sides, fiberglass over both sides, sand, primer, bondo(if needed)untill flat? where can i get cabosil? home depot? also how long should i let the resin cure before i start to primer? much thanks!

You could use epoxy...if you go with resin dont get it at home depot...it likely has wax in it. Tooling or laminating resin is what your after. The glass place I buy mine from calls it ISO resin.

Hey guy , i prefer Epoxy my self............... and if you decide to go that route remember that Epoxy can be used on Poly , or Vinyl , which means that...... Poly, or Vinyl , canot be used on Epoxy . Sangersean , when using Epoxy there is always somewhat of a compromise from filler's like (Bondo) right down to spraying Gell over the existing repair which will need a surface primer such as Duratec because Gell and Epoxy just dont mix , and for starters Cabosil most likely will not be sold at home depot, and like H2MOFO mentioned i pesonally would also shy away from buying any fiberglass materials at home depot . Sean i will throw this link out to you which will give you a general idea of prices on materials from resin , fabric , cabosil, ect , ect , and just where is you location ? www.uscomposites.com

I just did the same (86'd the transom holes). Built it up with glass to where it was within a fraction of an inch. Then took resin, cabosil, wax paper and a piece of glass.

I'm planing on switching from thru transom to over transom exhaust this winter (already have the headers) and I'd like to delete the holes as well. I think I'm just gonna play it safe and pay someone to do it for me. This looks like alot of work and definitely above my pay grade.

Hey guy ...... the beauty of doing fiberglass repair is ........first , it is just a dumb piece of fiberglass , and you are smarter then it . Two , if you f**k it up.............. it can always be fixed , and last do not throw your self under the bus because you can do something as easy as this .......trust me . Just my 2 cents..............And merry Christmas to all ...............................
