John ,are you ready....................................to show us some pics at this point or ..........................are you going to finish the job first and let us drool .![]()
Hah! Artie, you suck....
It's not perfect but it's hell for strong and so much better than it was before with those itty bitty stringers.
My son Ian was home from college over Xmas break and was a massive help. The punk is really gifted (though don't tell him I said so)
Got some dust in it while it was drying but by the time the boats together, you'll never notice it. Thanks again for all the help and encouragement Artie
Got the new stingers, bulkheads and gunnel supports in and ready for the final finish.
Also got rid of exactly 30 5/8” or larger holes in the transom. Plugged them with some oak dowel soaked in resin. Then 2 layers of 9.5 ounce cloth over that.
I then ground out the seam and capped part of the transom by laying 3 layers of 9.5 ounce cloth along with resin and Colloidal Silica (406). The brown that you see is the fairing powder (407) that I added to the resin to get the transom really close to final finish. It still adds some strength but is much easier to sand. I’ll shoot some DP50 and some K200 I have laying around and block that out to the final surface.
Ian also surprised me with this kick ass plate for my tips. We wanted to shotgun them and have a water jet cut the plate but the damn machine broke so he did it the old fashioned way with a drill, sawzall and files. The look is EXACTLY what I was hoping for.

Thanks so much guys. This is a project boat and I couldnt be happier on how it's starting to turn out. I'll keep posting pictures as it progresses.
Thanks again..........john
Looks great! Is that just resin on the floor or is there some kind of clear coat over everything?
All i can say is wow!![]()
Damn, nice job. What materials did you use?
Nutz Guys. Sorry, I missed your posts and questions. Thanks very much for the compliments
For material I used
2 2" x 4" x 14' clear kiln dried Douglas Fir boards.
I bedded them in with some West Systems epoxy 105 resin with some 205 fast hardener (I had some in the shop so I used that). I first wetted it out and then mixed another batch with some 406 Colloidial Silica mixed in. Once that set up, you could walk all over the stringers and bump into them and they didnt budge.
We then used West Systems epoxy 105 resin with some of their Special Clear 207 hardener. This makes the resin virtually transparent. We laid multipled layers of 9.5 ounce glass over the stringers and across the floor with this mix and let that set up. We then went back and sanded the entire floor and flo coated it with the 105/207 mix. This sets up to a super nice, shiny, and strong floor.
Once we're completely done rigging and building the boat, I'm going to shoot some SPI clear over all of it. That will give me all the UV protection I need and make it easy to color sand and buff whenever it needs some TLC.
Here's a link to a good video that shows the 207 in action. Jump to 1:09 in the movie to miss all the BS. 207 is awesome stuff. First time I've ever used it but I can't wait to find another use for it....
