    Default Possible new truck

Ok looking at new trucks, currently have a 05 Ford fx4 crew cab with the 6.0 (no real problems for me 117k miles) I dont tow much (house is only 1/2 mile from Jack Smith) really used for commute (LA fwys) and when we run out to the river so Im going to step down to a 1/2 ton for a better ride, cheaper gas and same mileage or maybe better. I will get a 4x4 crew cab loaded, Im looking really hard at the Ford ecoboost, in the running is the Dodge w/Hemi and GMC. Sorry no to Titan (flat out dont like) and Toyota (have a 10 Sequoia and like it alot but it only gets 13mpg. no matter what)

Any of you guys have real world experience with 2011 or 12 models of these trucks??

    Thanks

The 2011 Toyota tundra is really nice. It has plenty of space in it and a ton of room in the back seat. It's a nice truck with a smooth ride for the river commute.

Too funny, the OP said "no Titan/Toyota" and bam...the first reply is about Toyota.

That new Ford would be my choice.

I wouldn't know what to buy either. I don't like anything new out there these days.

My 04 Silverado 2500HD CrewCab just lost 4th gear (OD) on the way back from the river last weekend.

Was considering getting this 02 Ford 7.3L PS with low miles

Cars for Sale: 2003 Ford F250 4x4 Crew Cab Super Duty Lariat in Huntington Beach, CA 92649: Truck Details - 320160267 - AutoTrader.com

But I think I am going to put in a new Crate 4-L80E trans from GM for $3400 and keep my truck.

California Sales Tax is probably the biggest deterrent for me from replacing it.

I have extensive towing experience with the S-CREW 4x4 f150 ecoboost. - LOADED everything.
Its a very impressive half ton.
It only has a few annoying issues I uncovered

Heres a clip I took of it towing up the chiriaco summit in 108 heat outside pulling about 7-7500. (28 ft boat)

This is the toughest climb for me heading to the lake, I also hit the brutal climb out of Davis Dam a lot. As for the half ton trucks- this is it right now. My other truck is a Titan and aside from am mystery problem and once bad dealer service has been great- but no NA truck will pull like an EB in the heat or the deadly heat plus altitude combo.

I got about 18 MPG when not towing on the highway, and 10.8 on "about" an 800 Mile loop towing in the heat over hills from LA to Mead and back. (the long way one way on that trip because of a fire) about 2 MPG better than my titan or "about" 20% better in the EB.

Ive towed this boat with the 3:55 truck and the 3:73 truck.

If you are in the half ton market today- this is the truck.

    Thanks UD,
If you dont mind can you tell me of any issues? From what I have read mileage seems to be all over the place with owners. Also there were some problems in 2011 but Im hoping the bugs are worked out by now. Going to drive one this morning and also a Dodge.

    Thanks

Bugs are worked out - there were early trans pump issues that are cleared up. Engine is mature.

Issues are annoyances- Example- no visor flap extenders on either of the trucks I drove - this is pain heading to Parker in the afternoon as the trip form dessert center is another climb with the sun right in your eyes.

I didnt like the distance between when I put my elbow on the door and the left hand wheel. (thats me though)

The flat foor is cool- but there are "gotchas" 1st being the stupid woofer stuck to the passenger side of the floor that wrecks the usable space- (no stereo upgrade no woofer).

Second being that there isn't really anymore space top to bottom- Ford simply rised the portion on either side fo e the driveline hump so they could call it "flat". when room from the top of the back seat to the floor was measures my Titan has a longer (more comfortable) distance between the bottom of the seat and the floor- although the fors back seats reclines a bit more (more comfortable).

Front windshield to back windshield its identical to my titan-
From steering wheel to back windshield there sis 5 more inches than my titan- all because the ford dash is much more compact.

Truck rides superbly and its the quietest real truck Ive ever driven- by a lot. The NA truck have to rev their guts out on long hills to make the power where thet turbos make power everywhere on the EB and the inside of the truck stays whisper quiet on long hills (important when towing out of town on a friday while still taking and making calls)

I dont like the location of the map compared to my titan its lower on the console and you have to take your eyes completely off the road to look at it.

Plastic in the dash is a little chintzy, but its workable.

Aside from these things from a mechanical perspective- no other 1/2 ton touches this thing - PERIOD. Especially towing in the mountains and heat. The trans and turbos are fukin magic on this thing and work superbly as do all the coolers on the max tow version.

The 2012 tank is bigger which is really nice.

Mileage varies dramatically - I got 14 towing that same load before we hit the hills.

A boost gauge would be nice.

The 353 truck easily returns 20+ on the highway, but after towing this boat with it- I would not want to try my toy hauler - 10K with a 3:53 truck.

Great video UD but I got to say, hearing you idiot blast 3 peeps in a 2 mile stretch, you may need to mix in some Bette Midler on your river trips to keep your BP down!

    Thats Funny!

I knew one of you guys would comment about that.

I detest improper lane usage when towing up hill- its one of my true pet peeves.
That combined with trying to hold a camera while driving.
I debated wether or not to even air any of this I sounded like such a grumpy old fuck.

I was tired & grouchy that day as I had to add an hour and a half to my trip due to a fire on the 15.

    GRRRRRRRR

    ah fuck it........

Love my 2011 Chevy crew with a 5.3. Best truck I have ever owned, super smooth, great power and good mileage. I've heard good things about the Ford as well but I wouldn't give up my truck for nothin....... Funny, I got out of an 05 250 with a 6.o as well to get the Chevy. Loved the truck but the death wobble nearly killed me a few times.... Good luck!!
