Default How to make West Coast Offshore Racing Big?

So what do we need to do, why is 99% of the races in the east coast? I understand there are major boating manufacturers over there but that surely can't be the only reason. I know that POPRA is the organization that organizes alot of this; however, I haven't heard anything about them for the last couple years. I just checked their website and it seems the only up coming event is the Salton Sea shootout, how do we get racing back to Dana Point (I remember going to these when I was a kid and had a great time), Long Beach, San Diego (I know about the bayfair), Lake Mead, Havasu, etc...? Maybe I can volunteer some time or something to help with POPRA, but the other thing I was thinking was if we were able to get something going with POPRA we might be able to get it on MAV TV via Performance Boats new setup. What do you think?

Desert Storm was able to get the JBS turbine boat last year, maybe they and/or Geico would come out for a race?

I'd love too see offshore racing out on the Pacific coast too. Dana Point, Newport, Long Beach etc....Such great venues for offshore boats, have often wondered that myself... The california coast is really a beautiful setting for an offshore race, but like you said, the majority of the races are in the Atlantic or the Gulf...

Not sure that will ever change?....idk?

We need to make it happen IMO. If a group of guys can orchestrate an event like the S.C.O.P.E. poker run, I think it would be possible to get something done with POPRA. When there is a will there is a way!

It would be cool too see racing again on the So. Cal coast. I'm really disappointed SCOPE isn't running the LB Poker Run this summer. It was always my favorite event. Rainbow Harbor is fun, lots going on, close to home, and a sweet venue...

Only thing about Long Beach I didn't like, metered parking...just sayin...

It was pretty cool when the offshore races were in the places you mentioned. I remember the races in Ventura, Oceanside, Benicia and a couple of other california places. I think the east coast guys race for free and get a prize purse & some tow money. Maybe the west coast guys need to find a sugar daddy like a big offshore drilling company and they might be able to race for free too. That would bring more races to the west coast.

I personally think that the biggest reason is that California has too many communistic laws pertaining to pulling a trailer and such. when I was on the top fuel team, EVERY racer complained about the laws with big rigs, permits etc just to get to the track. I would also love to see something big come to the west coast but when the costs of just getting into the state with over width/length set ups, it sure does turn people around
boat- 95 Scarab 22, 496 stroker, Merlin heads, lots of fun

Tow Rig- 2011 Dodge 3500 CC Laramie, FASS pump, 160 total gallons of fuel, Smarty JR, Autometer, Sinister, 5" Stainless Flo Pro TB, S&B, B&W, Ravelco, Pro-Tech, B&W Companion, Pac Brake bags, 19.5 Vision's, now a dually pulling a 36 foot Cyclone and living in it full time

You would think that the permits would be something that POPRA could help to coordinate ahead of time?

not really. each person/company would have to do it themselves with DOT laws/regulations etc. california has almost ZERO tolerance for trailers longer than 48 feet and then you have to have axle spacing for bridge laws. I really hated when I had to haul into cali. love the weather, vehicles and the women are amazing but the laws and liberals kill it.

you know it only causes cancer in the state of california. lol

Couldn't you atleast inform the team ahead of time that these are the forms you will need or these are the routes to take or avoid?

yes they could. but with longer than 48 feet and over width then you have to say on main road, no side county roads (then other permits come into play) and can only travel during the day (over width) with a pilot car. cali has people by the sack.

i got pulled over traveling thru Sacramento in the "trucks ok lane". was the lead truck with 10 PBR rodeo bulls on board (over $1 million worth of bulls) and not able to just weave in and out of bad traffic. anyways, I see behind me and getting pulled over by CHP. pulled over and the cop gave me a ticked for driving in the WRONG LANE. I told him i was in the trucks ok lane. he said, IT ENDED 1/4 MILE AGO. there were 6 trucks behind me. I tried to explain I had expensive animals on board and his comment back was I DON'T CARE, WE DON'T GIVE BIG TRUCKS BREAKS IN THIS STATE. Tried writing a letter to the judge explaining the situation and never got a reply. $180 ticket. ZERO tickets on my record too. not even an overload ticket or log book violation. Still no leeway.

    Default We'd love to

We'd love to make it big again but it takes committed race teams or anyone that wants to become a racer (P-Classes). We had to cancel the Havasu
Gran Prix set for the weekend before Desert Storm due to lack of entries. We have a great race scheduled at Lake Tahoe on June 22-24 and then the Long Beach Offshore Gran Prix and Rum Run scheduled for July 20-22 but we need boats that want to participate. We've gone to the SCOPE get togethers to try to recruit and figure out how to get some to cross over to race but it's been like pulling teeth. I am completely open to suggestion at this stage of the game as I don't want to see POPRA flame out, we've all worked too hard to give up.

    Who wants to go race?????

Contact Ross Wallach, V.P. of Race Operations POPRA- rpmracingent@yahoo.com or (310) 318-4012

I would love to, I did one race in 08 and had the best time of my life; however, at this stage in my life just don't have the funds available to participate. I wouldn't mind volunteering my time to help do what I could for anything need though.

I agree. Good Post. Unfortanetly in today's economy, I don't see Cali going after any of these races, anytime soon. I know all of us would support them, and love to see it happen, but idk, it just seems like there isn't enough interest out west, all the action is on the east coast.!

I hope that changes though, bcuz I would love to spend a few weekends per/year watching boat racing off the Ca. Coast.!

I think that one thing that doesn't help anybody either is the rules and organizations. Just imagine if (pick your nascar driver) did a race out east for NASCAR and then wanted to come do a race in the west for XXXXX where his winning and points doesn't affect his NASCAR standings at all.
