There was some great competitors in the "CRA" series. Although I knew Dean Thompson and ran with him before he went to Sprints, It was always a pleasure to see who was going to get 2nd at Ascot. He was a winner! There was never a better race than him and Bubby Jones rubbing tires to the end.

    .....Great Era

    ...this is getting good.
    Thompson in the Bromme car
Jimmy Oskie in the JFK spl.
Bubby Jones in the Kazarian bros. cars
Rick Goudy in the Morales bros. "Tamale wagons"
    ...Ascot at it's finest.
In the early 70's,we were just kids,we'd head out to Manzanita speedway in Phoenix, for the Western States championships.
    150 non-winged sprints,4 days of Racing...
    Nor Cal...
    Leroy VanConnet,Mike(the Rat)Andreeta,Gary Patterson,Kaeding,Green
    The Ascot cars from So-Cal...
Lealand McSpadden,Ron&Billy Shuman,"Tiger"Gene Brown,Jerry McClung and others from Arizona...
    vs.
    Midwestern contingent...Roger Rager,Eddie Leavitt,Bubby Jones,Opperman.
    Easterners...Kenny Weld,Bobby Allen,Smokey Snellbaker...
The racing was insane,we'd camp for all 4 days in the parking lot,(no money)...all night parties, most of the drivers in attendance...

I've met him but he's still at the top of my list, a class act ...also to be included: Junior Johnson, Curtis Turner, Fireball Roberts, Mickey Thompson, Clay Smith, Ken Miles, Ed Winfield, Harry Miller, Bruce Crower, Zora Arkus Duntov....the list is almost endless.

Bruce still needs your prayers. He hasn't fully recovered from his bout with MRSA. He is truely a brilliant man and I'm glad that I got to know him quite well. His son's Danny and Steve are friend's of mine. As Hot Rod magazine said of Bruce " ... most people brain's are like being wired to 110, Bruce Crower's is wired at 440" That's an understatement.

I knew Don Vesco, talk about a great racer. Don lost one of his eye's while sitting in the grand stands at a sprint car race. A rock flew thru the saftey net and slammed into his glasses and blasted glass into his eye. He told me " you know I've gone 300+ mph on a motorcycle and have had lot's of crashes when I was young and to be sitting at a race and get hurt this bad is truely ironic" He later went on to drive his turbine powered streamliner car to a world record for wheel driver car's. I think he broke 500 mph in it.

Edit: His speed record is 458 mph. The car ran 471 out the backdoor. I was told it had plenty left over and could top 500. Don passed away before he could get back to Bonnivlle.

He was like a kid when he talked about that steamliner.
