Default 08 Ford 6.4 Exhaust Filter Cleaning

Just had my 30K service Friday am. SA tells me he did 2 recalls, 1 is a fitting, the other is a PCM reprogram. I ask why, he says little of this and that but should increase my MPG. Fantastic. Heading to the river right after and down the road I get a "exhaust filter cleaning" on the info panel. Never seen that before. About 15-20 min later, "Filter drive complete".

WTF is this. Did it once on the way and 2X on the way home today. Mileage seems the same.

Thats the new diesel particulate filter systems on the new fords. Its an emission thing. It stores all the soot in a black box under bed inline with the exhaust system and when the truck reaches a certain mileage and the truck is at a certain RPM it burns it all out. Atleast something along those lines

No shit? I wonder why it never did it before the reprogram and then did it 3X since Friday? Maybe my soot bag is full?

And you'll be happy to know, when you engine kicks into a DPF(diesel particulate filter) cleaning it uses a LOT more fuel.
Isn't it great how the EPA is keeping the air cleaner yet we're using/burning more fuel to achieve it.
PS you won't want to know how much that filter costs...when the warranty is over (OUCH)

The first time it kicked in I felt it. Truck ran a little rough.

Exactly on the tree huggers, they get 2 points for helping our economy imo.

The cleaning or purge is the sole reason you have the super funky exhaust tip. The exhaust temps are real high during that cycle. The computer mod (from what I have read) increased the min speed to maintain the purge cycle basically so nothing gets burned by the process.

Next few years urea injection will be used to cool the purge process down. MBZ Blue tech is already using it.

The message on the dash never came up until after they did the reprogram. Thats whats weird. This truck also high idles in park when its hot outside. None of my other trucks did that. Hit the brake and it settles back down.

Now that diesel is $3.00 a gallon, it doesn't hurt as bad as it used to.

RvRrat, take a look this product ,ee fuel. it will reduce diesel smoke from 39 to 61% which will help keep your filter cleaner along with 10 to 20% better fuel mileage. watch the two movies. www.fuellegacy.com/mikemcafee

Anyone done the DPF delete? I have a programmer with the delete code and been thinking of removing the DPF and upgrading exhaust to gain mpg.
