Once the officer was told what was going on, I think he should have assisted whomever it was in the situation, regardless of who they are or the color of their skin.

If you were in their position, told to come to the hospital as quickly as you can because a family member was about to pass, you couldn't see yourself in this same position? There is a time where you can bend the laws to conform with something that needs to be done. In this case, that's what it appears to be. The officer could have given the family the benefit of the doubt, walked in and checked on the situation himself. His cruiser was behind the SUV, they weren't going anyplace.

I think the officer was out of hand and out of touch. Dallas police chief said so as well. Sorry to see him resign. I think the family offered him every opportunity to make up with them. I was hoping that would happen next. His apology seemed sincere.
That's the story here locally. Moats ran 2 lights, the traffic was light and he slowed to assure there was no oncoming traffic. Under the circumstances few folks wouldn't do the same and the great majority of LE would likely lead them to the hospital and worry about a trivial ticket later.

The cop completely overreacted and unneccessarily took his time releasing Moats even after hospital personnel tried to intervene.

With the Chief of Police backing up poor judgement by this officer it's apparent he did wrong and his resignation to me, shows he knew he needs to move on.

100% agreed. Watched the video a few nights ago and could not believe my ears or eyes. The cop was on a power trip...plain and simple. I even watched it several times and still could not justify the officers actions!

I think they both could have handled it better probably, but I still side with the officer.

you know you don't have to be PRESENT to get a ticket right? If there is police video evidencing you ran a red, then the cop should have just said... Go ahead and go, and if he wanted to continue his high horse, he could have left the ticket on the windshield OR mailed it...

That's how camera tickets work... you get them in the mail... don't see the difference if an officer pulled you over or not. We got a ticket in the mail that an officer SAW my hubby parked in a red zone, hubby said he saw the cop and drove off, he had pulled over to use the cell phone DAH!... Anyways... we sure enough got that ticket in the mail... SO the cop never needed to pull him over, just needed his plates...

You can be god damn guaranteed that if the cop had to make a trip like that for himself the red and blue rollers would be lit up / the siren would have been blaring and there would have been no stopping for anything. 100% unprofessional in my opinion. I highly doubt all cops would have handled this the same ..

Hey bud.............Desperate times call for desperate measures. He was on a time clock (Dying family member) and knew every moment was crucial. Within Reason........ (desperate times) he was breaking the law (desperate measures) to get there. If the cop listened to him saying "My mother in Law is dying" and made a reasonable common sense decision, the guy would have been there to see her go while the cop was writing the ticket.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.........when you run out of toilet paper, you use your socks. Its not right, but what else are you gonna do?

but doing that with lights and sirens on is not against the law. Yes i do agree it should have been handled differently though..i will say their POBR in Texas must really suck.

Is that true, he can run around with lights and sirens for personal use? Seems quite wrong to me.

I would of told that cop to go f himself and send me the ticket, whatever it was. Tow my rig, impound it, whatever makes him happy. I wouldn't chance missing my one last goodbye to a loved one for anyone.

you are right, it is against dept policy, but not as far as the vehicle code is concerned. Either way i understand why the driver was driving the way he was. It should have been handled differently.

What's funny is that thread a while back where a fireman beat someones dog to death got maybe two pages..this thing's never gonna end! I guess if this is the hot topic for LE right now then we shouldn't complain too much!

He screwed up, hes fired now, what else do u guys want? I wish private sector got this much airtime. Could u imagine? "a ford mechanic fails to fix a 6.0 diesel the first time, leaves driver stranded, news at 11"

On a serious note, these types of incidents should serve as a training tool for LE officers, especially the new ones. Should you ever trust anyone you're dealing with.?...not until you verify their story. Do people go to great measures to get out of traffic tickets, yes. Do people lie to the cops? Yes. This driver's story should have been verified right away, ie "let me have your DL and lets go in and find your mother in law" If he was lying, he'd go to jail for delaying an officer...if he's not, wish him and his family the best ..offer to lock up his vehicle for him..and move on to the next one. Hell, even drive back by later and ask how everything was going..how's that for customer service!

I'm a bit young to have ever seen this but...What ever happend to the code 3 escort to the hospital if your wife was in labor or a family member was dieing?
The Cop was doing his job but it would be nice to see a little compasion from our public servents. With that being said, 4 of the cops brothers were just murdered in the line of duty 2 of them on a traffic stop. All police everywhere are on edge as they should be.
