Fastest route to Tahoe??

I have a place in Gardnerville, NV so I am back and forth all the time. 395 is the way to go for me. Way less traffic and much prettier drive. If you are towing you may want to take 50 out of Carson City instead of Kingsbury. Another route is 88 to 89 (Luther Pass) to South Lake. This is also a very beautiful road. As an alternative return trip (if you have a little extra time) is 89 back to 88, then 88 through Jackson and then highway 12 to 99. This drive is very pretty without much traffic. I used to live in Valley Springs, CA and have done that drive many times in all kinds of weather. Always very scenic.
