Fastest route to Tahoe??

Never been to Tahoe staying on the south shore Zephyr cove and want to know whats the fastest route to Tahoe?? I am leaving from Anaheim and would it be the 5 to the 50? or the 15 to the 395?

If your not in a huge hurry the 395 is the prettier route. It adds about an hour to the overall drive. Otherwise the 5 all the way up is the fastest. Unfortunatly you have to make your way up through LA to get out of town so choose the time you leave (and return) carefully. Once you get out of LA the road fly's. Just keep your eyes peeled for chp.

I would think the 5 would be better driving conditions, I would go I5 to hwy 4 in Stockton to hwy 99 to the 50, but I have never driven it from there, nor that much of the 395...Just to Mono lake years ago.

If you go the 50 route you'll be fine but the only advice I can give is when you get into the mountains make sure to do what the speed signs say...If it says slow to 30 around the corner, do it. When are you going up?

im a truck driver by trade and the only good way is the 395 IMO.. less traffic and a much nicer drive the CHP sucks on the 5 and they are quick to ticket speeders esp if you are pulling a trailer. the only thing about the 395 is that most sections are 2 lane but traffic flows much better. depending on time of day and day that you leave will also be a factor. getting through LA from the OC will be a beeoch no matter what time or day of the week and if you leave after 2 pm from the oc and go 57 10 15 395 you will have to put of with every body going home to the IE from LA. leave in the morning and youll be golden

Go 395, much nicer, kingsbury grade will cut some time off to south tahoe too but I wouldn't advise it towing anything heavy (steep in places). It cuts at least 30-40 minutes off going in on 50 from Carson City.

I lived in Tahoe for three years and have taken many routes.
- I like the 395 for the scenery and it is actually only like 15 minutes slower to South Shore from LA. Since you’re going to Zephyr it probably will be quicker then taking the I5, and on the I5 if a truck decides to pass another truck you’ll be going 45mph for 15 min.
- Stop in Bishop at Whisky Creek and have the tri-tip sandwich for lunch. Bishop should be about half way for you.
- When you get into Minden, NV get fuel it's incredibly cheaper and you’re only about 45min away from Tahoe.
- Then take SR207 (Kingsbury Grade) to Tahoe. Look on a GPS or map and you can cut through Minden Gardnerville to get to the base of the grade. This will save you about 10min. At the top of the grade behold the wonder of Tahoe!
- When you get to the light by the Casinos turn right and Zephyr will be up about 5 minutes up.
I hope this helps. If you are boating go to D.L. Bliss on the West Shore to throw anchor and chill. People throw anchor, drink brews, and enjoy the scenery. Also Zephyr goes off pretty good to on the weekends. Any other questions PM me.

I went last year up the 395 and then over that large hill into tahoe with a 48 sunseeker superhawk. That was some hill to climb. But yes I agree the 395 up is the best way but going through all those little towns watch your speed carefully.
