CLEAR YOUR MIND ,AND YOUR ASS WILL FOLLOW
I for one am not basing my perceptions (with regard to crime in Temecula) on this one incident, there have been more than a few leading up to this.
The details about what happened should develop in the near future, and justice demands objectivity IMO. The shooting may have been justified, or perhaps not.
This is going to be interesting to find out what actually happened.
On the news the sister of the dead guy made it sound like he was standing up for his wife after the cop touched her inappropraitely in the bar. Somehow they end up outside and the deceased was just standing there with his young boy next to him when the cop pulled his gun and shot him in the chest.
Nothing like the first report on here. I hope it was not a drunk cop making a very stupid (and sad) mistake while being drunk. Not only does it affect the victims, families and cop. It also affects law enforcement as a whole and how people view them.
Drunken stupidity knows no boundaries.
If you’re a copper or somebody with a concealed permit – isn’t it kinda short-sighted to go into a bar knowing you have a weapon? Why not leave the weapon and the attitude in the car?
Saw a city fire a copper recently after pics appeared on MySpace. The off duty was hunched over yacking at the curb, beer bottle in hand, while a friend held the coppers weapon to his head. Drunken stupidity and the copper has made it clear he intends to sue the city for wrongful termination.

Be interesting to see how the Temecula situation shakes out.

I pulled this out of one of the local papers:
TEMECULA - Old Town Temecula was teeming with visitors again Sunday despite a shooting Saturday night that left one man dead and another hospitalized just hours after the annual spring Rod Run had ended.
Organizers and Old Town business owners said Sunday they hope the incident will not cast a cloud over the popular biannual event.
An off-duty Costa Mesa police officer opened fire on a group of men who were beating him outside the Bank of Mexican Food restaurant at the corner of Old Town Front and Main streets about 7:20 p.m., said Riverside County sheriff's spokesman Deputy Craig Roberts.
The man identified himself as a police officer at some point before he opened fire, Roberts said, but apparently that did not deter the men, who were attacking him and might even have struck him with a chair. Roberts said he did not know what provoked the fight. The two men the officer shot were both taken to an area hospital, where one of them died Saturday night, Roberts said. The officer was treated for injuries that were not life threatening. None of their names was released Sunday.
Roberts said the law allows off-duty officers to carry firearms.
Craig Puma, owner of the Bank of Mexican Food, said the officer had been inside the restaurant celebrating his girlfriend's birthday with friends.
When the gunfire broke out, Puma said, he tried to tell everyone inside the restaurant to get down, but some patrons thought he was joking and that the gunfire was some kind of historical reenactment because of the neighborhood's Old West theme.
Annual Fundraiser
Puma called the shooting an isolated incident, adding that he hopes it will not reflect poorly on the neighborhood or the Rod Run.
"It was an incident that could have happened anywhere. It doesn't have anything to do with the Rod Run," Puma said. "We have no fear of this being an ongoing problem."
Organizers of the Temecula Rod Run are distancing the charity event from the fatal shooting.
Ray Waite, president of P and R Foundation, promoter of the event, said the Rod Run was over for hours when the shooting occurred.
"If somebody got shot two hours after the Super Bowl, do you blame the Super Bowl for it?" Waite asked. "It had nothing to do with Rod Run. I was home relaxing when it happened and everyone else associated with Rod Run was gone when it happened."
He said the 22nd year of the Rod Run attracted 20,000 people Friday and 60,000 people Saturday and the events were held without any hitches. The event featured 650 hot rods and classic cars and raised money for the Boys and Girls Club of Southwest Riverside County and other groups.
As always, it will be awhile before the FACTS come out. Lets ALL see what they are
FIRE IN THE HOLE!
The name association sucks, that's a great event.

LMAO
I want to live in a state where everyone has guns to protect themselves with.
When I was a child growing up in Oregon, I remember some town outlawed all guns within the city limits. Our little town responded with an ordinance requiring every household to have some sort of firearm to protect the members of the household.

From ABC News
By Subha RavindhranTEMECULA (KABC) --
Family members of a man killed by an off-duty police officer in Temecula are speaking out about the incident.
Shawn Velan, 30, was shot and killed Saturday night in Temecula by an off-duty Costa Mesa police officer.
"At about 7:20 P.M., officers from the Temecula Police Department responded to a 245 -- assault with a deadly weapon call in the area. The responded to a restaurant-type bar and located two victims of a gunshot shooting," Riverside Sheriff's Deputy Craig Roberts said.
Police say it all started while people were out celebrating the end of a popular annual hot rod car show.
Velan and his friends were at a Mexican restaurant when witnesses say the officer inappropriately touched a female friend.
"She turned around and said, 'What are you doing?' He said, 'Oh, I thought you were my sister.' Then Shawn stood up for her and said, 'Don't touch her like that,'" said Dara Lewenthal, the victim's girlfriend who witnessed the altercation.
Police say the shooting eventually took place outside the restaurant where the officer pulled out a gun and shot Velan and his friend. Lewenthal says Velan's 7-year-old son was standing right next to his father when he was shot.
"(The officer) just pulled out a gun and started shooting. He hit Shawn and shot (his friend) in the leg, which is (his son's) height," Lewenthal said.
"I'm sure an officer is trained to shoot-to-kill and that's what he did. Just full-on shot him in the chest. Just blew his chest apart," Karen Crowley, the victim's mother, said.
Velan's friend Taylor is in critical condition at a local hospital. The police officer was also injured in the shooting but has been released from the hospital.
It's unclear if any charges will be filed against the officer.
Police are still trying to piece together what exactly happened, so if you have any information you're asked to call the Temecula Police Dept. at (951) 696-3000.
I look forward to witness statements not involved in either party.
Don't argue with idiots....they'll just bring you down to their level then beat you with experience!
Officers are not taught to "shoot to kill." They are trained to shoot to stop, usually at center mass. Thinking that you can look at the final result of an altercation and understand every detail, and the mindset of each party is absurd.
Knowing what I know about the press, figure 20% of that story to be accurate.
