Just don't get it...

Just got done watching a story on channel 7 news about a Costa Mesa couple that has been in the adoption process for a Haitian toddler for many months. Well, they finally received their child and seem to be very happy. I too am happy for them and wish them years of happiness.

However,
I just don't understand why people adopt children from foreign countries when there are thousands of children living here in America that are living in foster care or are otherwise available for adoption.

I think it's great that people are willing to open their houses and lives to a complete stranger and accept them as their own, but don't understand why they feel the need to go to foreign countries to do so.

Brad Pitt and his crazy wife, along with Madonna, are perhaps the largest celebrity personalities involved in this practice, I just wish they would put that same effort into the country that has given so much to their lives.

It's because it it cost prohibitive to adopt in the US. The cost of adopting outside of the country is a fraction of what it costs here and you have less hoops to jump through. Then, if you adopt here, you have to worry for the next 18 years that the birth parents will change their minds. They may not win, but you will still have to spend 10s of thousands of dollars on litigation. When they are adults, the birth parents, or siblings will likely try to come back into their lives, or the kids will try to find them. If you adopt out of the country, I'd say the chances of a courtcase and later contact with birth parents greatly diminishes. It's a much cleaner adoption. The problem is not the people adopting, it's the cost and legal fees (immediate and potential) in this country and that is a shame.

exactly.. my neighbors have been trying to adopt for several years.. spent no telling how much money.. They both have very well paying jobs, own there house, new vehicles.. and are really nice people... but still no child, they tell them a child might be available, get their hopes up, and then nothing... they are ready to give up...
