do it soon (before it gets to hot)and do not bring a gun, metal detector, big knife or any thing that may protect you..
Most national parks are run by NAZI types who do not even want you there.....
Sorry, but had been harrased in too many to like entering anymore...

We used to camp in the Wonderland of Rocks. Bitchen place to spend bouldering and caving. Just a blast.
Bees may be a problem already, be aware.
We go with the Boy Scouts every year. There are lots of hikes, trails, bike rides that are easy, rock scrambling is fun for everyone with good knees.
A couple of years ago we went in a big loop and tried to just get back to camp. We used a GPS and it knew where we were, but we got disoriented pretty easily. It was fun to ask the boys to point at camp...they were always at least 40% off
Bring water. There is water at the entrances, but most camp sites are dry. Pit toilets.
Be prepared for all weather extremes. In October we got 18" of snow...woke a kid up who thought a bear was snuffling in camp (it was snow shifting on his tent) and he went bonkers...It can be pretty warm during the day and still close to freezing at night.
We are going this weekend.

Not a huge fan of Joshua Tree anymore, but Sunfair Dry Lake is a fun spot to off-road. It's near Joshua Tree, so if you have some dirt toys maybe you can spend an afternoon there.
