    Default Explanation?

This might explain, or at least put his comments in perspective. Although I don't necessarily agree. This is an excerpt from a CNN Money article.

"But Paul Ballew, chief economist at insurer Nationwide who was formerly a director of sales analysis at GM, said it's always been clear within the auto industry that given the choice between tougher fuel economy standards and higher gas prices, the latter is a better deal for the automakers.

"They're not going to get it though, because that would take a lot of sanity in Washington and we're not going to see that," he said. "

Destroy the free market and freedom of choice..........what about the best deal for all 300+ million every day Americans? Oh, you support the left and that is not in the ideology.

It's an ongoing cycle. Promote big safe vehicles till the market saturates, then promote smaller more economic cars till that market saturates, then start bringing back larger vehicles so people can haul more but at a cost of less fuel ecomony, saturate that market and promote the fuel economy which also intales smaller vehicles. The cycle will never stop, but to promote higher gas prices to better your electric vehicle sales isn't a smart move.

Just wait till the batteries in those cars start to go bad, then see how economical that vehicle was.
