Oklahoma House approves welfare drug testing SURE HOPE THIS SLIDES SOUTH INTO TEXAS...I don't have a problem with folks that can afford drugs...Like Whitney Houston, but I am against paying your rent and grocery bill so you can snort coke and shoot up.

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma House has approved a bill to require drug testing for certain welfare recipients, but not before it was amended to include testing for those seeking elected office.

The full House voted 82-6 on Monday for the amended bill. It now heads to the Senate for consideration.

Oklahoma City Republican Rep. Guy Liebmann said those receiving Temporary Benefits for Needy Families would pay for the test and then be reimbursed if they test negative. Under the bill, children whose parents fail a test would be able to receive benefits through another family member.

Democratic Rep. Mike Shelton of Oklahoma City successfully amended the bill to require candidates for state and local offices to be tested for illegal drugs before filing for office.

We have that in FL. Turns out less than 2% test positive, lower than the gen pop. We also have a bill to test all state workers. An amendment to drug test the legislature failed.

I had heard the same 2% number so I went looking into it to see where it came from. I read on opinion sites that 2% failed and another 2% refused to take it. Looking on news sites in Florida I found a bit more info.

Published in the Miami Herald which quoted the Department of Children and Families as their source.

Florida's welfare drug testing halted by federal judge - Florida - MiamiHerald.com

They started testing in mid July. A judge halted it in October. The drug testing law was only was in effect for 3 months. 7,000 passed and only 32 failed. That's less than 2 percent. But, here's the kicker, 1,600 refused to take it. That's a lot more than 2%. The population of Florida is 19 million. 8,600 people is a very small sampling for statistical purposes.

My opinion? The 2% number is complete crap. Sample size of 8,600 is definitely less than 1% of the welfare recipient population of Florida. But 20% refused to take the test. Anyone can speculate about how many of those 1,600 refused because of doing drugs or refused on privacy grounds. Those are really the only 2 reasons I can see to refuse to take the test. My speculation is at least 80% of those 1,600 refused because they knew what the outcome would be. You cannot tell me that large of a number of people decided to protest the tests because of privacy issues. These are people on welfare. THEY CAN'T AFFORD TO REFUSE THEIR MONEY IN ORDER TO PROTEST!

You're saying that the number of people on welfare in Florida exceeds 860,000? How many people do you think collect welfare?

Population of Florida is 19 million. 13.8% (more than 1 in 10) of them live below the poverty line. Yes, I think it's safe to assume that 1 in 20 receive some sort of welfare assistance.

Florida QuickFacts from the US Census Bureau

Can't resist taking a jab at the 164 IQ / MENSA thing. How many people did you think lived in Florida? Was math not on the test?

In round numbers they have 2.6 million that are at or below poverty... I would say your assumption is a VERY safe one at 860,000...

    Here you go:

2008 numbers 87,632 on cash welfare assistance and 1,694,649 on food stamps.

    State-by-State Welfare Assistance - Graphic - NYTimes.com

Yep pretty close to 1 in 10. Twice what I estimated. And you know recipients have gone way up since 2008.

2011 cash welfare assistance at 119,080. Doesn't list food stamps.

Total Recipients > Welfare Caseloads statistics - states compared - StateMaster

I include food stamps because your local drug dealer does accept EBT cards. And because Florida's drug testing included it as well since it's part of TANF.

I've answered your question of how many people I thought were on welfare and how many actually are (more than I first thought by about double). How many people did you think were on welfare? Worried about wasted tax dollars yet?

This is a perfect example of how RTI and other libs don't bother to obtain facts when the results do not agree with their rhetoric.
The 2% figure is obviously a manipulated number.
What we "think" is not always fact, it is opinion.
Ram will always believe that his opinion is fact, and does not require any back up.
