Apparently, they released a little bit of the meeting info General McCrystal had with Obama prior to being relieved of his command.

"On every question of construction (of the Constitution) let us carry ourselves back to the time when the Constitution was adopted, recollect the spirit manifested in the debates, and instead of trying what meaning may be squeezed out of the text, or invent against it, conform to the probable one in which it was passed."
Thomas Jefferson letter to Justice William Johnson, June 12, 1823

I agree and they are restricting this one even at greater levels. I am sure the CIC and Gates are making military decisions they have no business making due to lack of experience, knowledge, etc...rather then leaving it to the experts who have dedicated their lives to service for OUR Country.
To bad the entire page was not shown. It goes on to explain that what McCrystal did was planned, he knew what he was doing when he spoke to this particular press and not CNN, MSNBC or Fox. Some of the restriction placed on our military now are ludicrous; such as no more preditors, no more rockets taking out taliban and no more rifle fire without being threatened. I wish someone would print the entire story, not just the photo. It almost forbidden to kill a muslim
Its a real shame our troops are having their hands tied with such limiting rules of engagement. To many folks want war to be sanitized and perfect. As I have not fought in war, I can only imagine its intensity and confusion and to limit the response of our forces just doesn't make sense. Our leadership needs to decide to pull out and call it a day, or fight the war to win. This half-assed P.C. crap is not going to win a war and will only get additional soldiers killed. God bless our soldiers!!!
It's tough to win a war when you are trying to establish alliances with people you are killing. I have fought in wars and I have seen the downside of restictive ROE. Unfortunately, it appears we are not figting to win the war as much as the hearts and minds of tribal humans. You are correct...

Nothing more frustrating for a warfighter than to have his/her hands tied. This could be a winnable war. Question for leadership is do you want to win and at what cost?
