Default 1994 Ford Explorer Limited Towing?

We are getting ready to move soon. Sold my truck months ago. We have a 1994 Ford Explorer Limited with the tow package on it. Reciever under the bumper, trans cooler, etc. We have towed the quads on the small trailer before, but now I am in a state of having to move. We live north of the bay area, will be moving north of Truckee. We have two tandem trailers, one being our V-drive boat on its trailer and the other is a tandem utility trailer with a max load of 5000 pounds. Would the explorer with the 4.0 V6 and Automatic trans. with overdrive make it up over Donners Pass with a max 5000 lbs trailer. I heard stories about the trannys being a weak link.

if it rated for 5000 pounds its probably fine, just make sure you dont try to blow 80mph up the hill.

id be more worried about the brakes if your trailer doesnt have brakes on it. they dont exactly have the best brakes in the world, just some single piston PBR setups in the front with like 11" discs...

I'd go up the pass without overdrive on. I think overdrive is the weak link when towing with any auto transmission.

Another option would be to rent a Tahoe/suburban from someone like enterprise. I'm 99% sure that both those vehicles come from the factory with a hitch installed. Just don't tell them you are renting it to tow. Just rent the vehicle take it home and hook up your trailer. You'll need the correct drop hitch of course.

It might be awhile til we can give it a try. Storms are rolling in. Hopefully we can get a one week window of sun.
