Default Thinking about buying a M1028A3

Hey guys, i have the opportunity to buy a Chevrolet 4x4 K30 dually.
Almost rust free with 26000 miles, 1984, 6.2 Diesel. Was an us army airfield snowplower.
Will give it a visit this week, what do i have to look at?
What do i have to know about this truck?
Just want it for fun use, and of course towing 16'-20' Boats sometimes.

Does this thing really only do 55 mph? What does it need to make it a little faster, want it to about 62 mph easy?

No, it probably won't do 55mph with that motor. Register it as a diesel and then throw a Big Block in it, or a 5.9 cummins. Then you'll have a tow rig

    Default 6.2

lbhsbz- I believe he is in Germany, Not too many BBC's and 5.9's there, I bet. (Diesel prolly $10 a gal too) As far as the 6.2, with 4.56 gears, 4 speed trans, and a 235/85/16 tire, should run to the mid 60's, However, the U.S Army may have it governed to 55 mph. It would tow a 20 ft boat fine, slow, but fine. Daniel

The fuel screw is easy to get to on that pump, give it a half turn and advance the timing a little(Both easy to do.) You can turn them up quite a bit, But install a pyrometer. That's the diesel we started modding in the 80's, I was a teenager helping my dad do this stuff. They'll make pretty good power.

    Thanks for the help.
The Owner decided not to sell it in the end.

The most important thing to check on snow plow trucks is the frame! They seem to twist when repeatedly getting rammed into snow banks!!!

Things to remember: It's 24 volt unless it's been converted. Yes, it will run mid 60s which by now you know. The problem with that engine was if you put to much load on it during a decel it will stretch the head bolts. The dash is 24 volts also. The radio fuse, if I remember correctly is still 12 volts if you want to check it and tap in there for your accessories.

EDIT: Just noticed you in Stuttgart, are you at Patch or Echterdingen? Didn't they close most of the other bases? If you're at Echterdingen is Snoopy's still there?
