    Default Silverado transmission probs?

My Dad has an ’03 Chevy z71 Silverado 5.3 with the 4l80-e transmission that has the transmission clunk problem that Chevy is calling “normal”. It has been to the dealer 4 times and they reprogram the computer and the problem goes away for a few miles and then comes back. I know this problem is not normal because I have driven several other identical trucks that shift like silk. I bought an ’04 last week with the same transmission and it shifts no problem. Everywhere I look online I find people with the same problem but no one seems to be able to explain what is actually going on with the transmission. Dad has 6k miles left on the warranty so we need to figure out what’s going on before it runs out. Any ideas?

that's what i was thinking, all 1/2 tons will have the 60

Dare to be different, if it turns out great you can claim you planned it that way.

if its doin it as you're taking off, have him check the lil black pads on the overload springs(should be 1 on the top frt and back of the springs, with a rubber washer under them), they wear out/fall off and let the springs wrap alil , which is felt in the tranny. other than that , you could ask for a new valve body installed , you may have a valve sticking in its bore. usually when i get a truck that i can tell has no hardware/software issues, i slam a new valve body in it, generally it fixes them.

Hmmm I was told the 4L80 has the 3" deep pan and the 4L60 has the 2 1/4" pan. I'm guessing this isn't true?

It hits hard from 1-2 and 2-3 from a stop and is especially bad the slower the truck is driven.

if its a 1/2 ton, its a 4l60e they may have made a z71 3/4ton, but i'm not aware of it, i also don't pay much attention to what comes thru the doors too so they may have a 3/4ton z71.somebody could've put the stickers on as well on at the dealership, we've done that before. z71 is a suspension option upgrade code, skids plates, bilsteins, etc..

check those plastic spring bumpers i mentioned and see if they've worn out and fell out. if they're gone, you'll see a empty hole in the overload spring , frt and back. other than that, i'd say ask for the valvebody replacement, and tell em to do the valvebody assembly , not just the valve body itself. the assembly comes with all new solenoids and valves 90% of the shift issues i see are valvebody related.

Dare to be different, if it turns out great you can claim you planned it that way.

Very good info. This is exactly what I was looking for, thank you so much! It's at the dealer right now so I will be relaying the info to my Dad to see what the dealer will do. I'll update what the dealer says. Thanks again!

My 05 does it every now in then from a stop. It seems like it hasn't done it in a few months. Sometimes it will clunk when you go from reverse to drive too. My buddy, GM tech, flashed the computer. Doesn't really happen that much at all to bother me, but I have felt it a few times. I'm out of warranty so no new valve body for me.

check those spring bumpers i mentioned, on a 05 they're wore out and prob gone, doesn't take 30-45k to wear em out.look at the overload springs and see if they're there or not, the spring wrap they cause feels verryyyyy similar to slack in the trans or driveline.

Well the dealer said again they can’t find anything wrong. They did find a u-joint that was a little worn and replaced it. We mentioned the information shared here and they laughed at us. We personally checked the springs and bumpers and those look okay. We are going to end up taking this thing to a Transmission shop even though it’s under warranty Again they flashed the computer and it drove fine for about a week...
