Default Ford V8 6.0L Turbo Diesel

I'm considering purchase of a used '06 tow vehicle e/w 6.0L Turbo Diesel with 72k miles. Anybody have towing experience with this setup? It seems that later models are now 6.4Ls. Thanks in advance.

good luck keeping it on the road and outta the shop if you buy it, upgrade the egr cooler immediately!

Dare to be different, if it turns out great you can claim you planned it that way.

I don't have a 6.0, from what i hear, the later years (like yours) are a better than the original 03' ish ones. There are fixes for the inherent problems with them. Where are you located? I can refer you to a couple of great places to fix those things if you're near so cali.

Try this site. I have a 04 and deleted the EGR my self and is very easy to do. The kit that you buy is $600 so I made my own by welding s.s. flange to the intake side and exit side of the cooler and it works great. And FREE

i love my 06 it has never let me down i tow my 23 ft boat and i also to a 37ft 5th wheel im programmed intake exhaust lifted 35 in tires the whole shabang. i have had my problems but its only cause i hard on my truck. use it like a man and with 50000 miles on it its still under warranty so i dont care yet everything that is supposed to fail has already failed and i have all the upgraded fixes so im good to go now. you wont be disappionted. there are a lot of ford haters out there but im ok with that ive go so much power to the wheels that i cant hear the shit talking through the plume of black smoke i leave them in. unless its a built cummins from 03 04. that motor is the shit and im in the process of saving money to drop that motor into my ford. i will be destroking my ford soon enough. the ultimate truck would be ford exterior chevy interior ford 4x4 system allison tranny and a cummins 24valve common rail. if someone built this I'd buy in a second

Go to Powerstrokenation.com forums, we call the 6.0 the 6 uh-oh there, They just dont have the reliability of the 7.3. The 6.4 has emmesions problems, you are lucky to get 12 mpg towing anything. I get fifteen towing seven head of horses, 16 towing my boat, and 20 empty in my 7.3

I have to agree with that. I also like the six door F650 with a tricked-out interior, a built Cummins Common Rail(say 700hp/1400tq) and a Kelderman Air Ride suspension to smooth out the road.

I had a 2006 6.0 4x4 crew cab F250 - I sold it last year with about 65,000 miles on it, mostly towing boat (25 howard), car trailer (9,000 lbls) or toy box (11,000 lbs). I put on a Donahue Racing 4" lift and 35" tires and lost 2 mpg. Then I added the complete Banks system (Big Hoss Bundle) and lost another mpg.

If you leave the truck stock it is pretty bullet proof. There are a number of issues that do occur like the egr plugging, the turbo vanes sticking, oil build up in the turbo, that leads to the turbo hose slipping off, blown head gaskets are common on trucks with any mods (ARP head bolts is the common cure.).

I this months issue (July 2009) of Diesel Power they have an article - "Every 6.0l powerstroke problem solved" - they pretty much hit them all. I would definately get a copy and read up before you buy.

The truck is a nice truck but is built to withstand stock power only. But it is so nice to have the extra power.

I had a 2000 7.3L before for 88K miles and had not 1 problem, I wish I would have kept that truck!

I now have a 2008 Duramax with Alison 6 spd - love this truck except for the DPF which kills the mileage. But great power compared to the Ford.

Good luck finding the right truck, definately some great deals to be had.

I just un-plugged the EGR valve and never had a problem after on my 04. The delete kit not worth the money when un-plugging one wire does same thing! Other than that its a good engine mine had just over 200K when it was sold.

I have a 2006 6.0 diesel and I like it. I blew the head gaskets a few months ago and bought the arp studs and the dealer did the work under warranty. I also was able to talk the tech into throwing in the egr delete in the process, should be good to go now. The nice thing about 07 and older trucks is you can put a tune on them and pull it out and take the truck in for service.

Google 6.0 powerstroke......start reading and cringing ! Serously, i know some people have "good" ones....but if you get one like most people, AND have no warranty.....LOOK OUT! Any truck that requires the whole cab to be removed from the frame by hoist, to change the headgaskets (which are problamatic to that engine) is a no go in my book. Id get a 03 and down 7.3, or roll the dice with the new 6.4 before buying a used 6.0. Know way to many people personally that have experienced all the carnage you read about with those puppies...
