    Default Tranny toast?

    Hey guys,

Gotta 2002 Ford Supercrew w/ 5.4 and 95K miles. Trans has started acting up. Some false neutrals when coming up to a stop light, then taking off when light changes--(when it never gets stopped.). Doesn't like the down shift. Rolling around a corner onto an on ramp, I've felt the same thing.

Took it into the quicky lube about a month ago. Had the transfluid dumped (little metal on the plug), the transfilter changed and some Lucas trans fix dumped on top of the new fluid (grabbin' at straws..).. Mostly it's been on issue on down shifts.. not any more.

Lately, it takes 3-4 seconds to shift into gear after I move the shift lever.(No lag going into reverse).. Have felt it slip a couple times on the 3-4 shift in the last couple of days..

I've been told there's two tranny's on the supercrew's and I have the smaller one (not sure that's right). I know there's a bunch of electrical running todays tranny's. Could this be electrical or is it mechanical?

If mechanical, is it gonna cost me more to "run it till it dies"?? How much should a tranny rebuild cost (installed)?? Anything to look out for??

Lookin' for suggestions. Not gonna be back for a few days, but I'll check back when I'm home.

    Thanks!!

    RT

Check the fluid level......that's where (usually) the problem lies.(after service has been completed.....by kid mechanic who has no real idea of what to put in cause he works on so many different vehicles and does not road test the car cause he does not make any real $$$$ doing it)(you get what you pay for)(recurring theme here)

Add a little to see if it gets better/conditions change.

    STOP going to quicky lube!

I gotta stop posting cause I ain't makin any $$$$ here.

Appreciate your input. You know your stuff. Maybe I could just pay you? You make house calls to fresno?

First thing I checked was the level. It was topped off. And they put the additive in it for Mercon. Owner of the shop is who does the work there. He's a good guy. And I'd love the dealer to do everything but I ain't got the bucks.

Dealers around my area gotta pay for their Taj Majal dealerships. Friend just had his battery changed at the ford dealer for $175.00.. Did he get what he paid for? Must be gold plated.

    MikeF is on.

Check the level, run through the gears, then check the level. The go drive it, get the trans hot and then check the level. Read your owners manual. In that other 95k miles, have you serviced the trans at all? Different tranny obviously(Allison), but I do mine every 30k, and change the external filter every time I do a motor oil change.

Repeat. I've checked the level. The level is good. Tranny been flushed 3 times with the filter done twice. I've owned it since new, and I'm good with my maintenance.

Is there any electrical issues with this tranny or is it all mechanical (inside).. And am I gonna be spending more money, if I drive it till it drops? Wondering if Tranny's are more of an "exchange" thing now regardless of condition.

Go see Randy at clovis transmission or andy at bulletproof. They will give you the straight answer.

We use Randy for all our HP applications and he has always built us a solid transmission. I also have a guy who works at ART who does our stock stuff on the side for a very decent price..

Yep-- It's toast. Got real ugly on the way to work today.. Sat through a green light (unintentionally).. Damm. Hooked it up to a scanner today and no electrical issues. All internal.

Took it to Clovis Transmission (Thanks for the tip TahitiJet-- Seems like a nice shop) Hope they do it right.. $600 more than my other quote..

Have a 4 year plan on this truck and really hope I'm "gettin' what I pay for".. And not just gettin it.. MikeF should be happy now (from my intake maifold thread a week ago..)

No it's not standard by any means...6.0 converter (i have a 7.3), allison bearings, custom center support, custom clutches, custom valve body, snap rings etc.

www.jwtt.com give him a call, great guy. Not the cheapest around but he gurantees the tranny no matter what chip/tires/abuse you throw at it for two or three years i think. I tow my 40' fifth wheel with it,shifts 100 percent better..no more slushbox. I went with the basic towmaster tranny, but he does do billet converters, billet shafts, etc for more $$ but i would never need that much tranny.

I want to say , though, that comparable to a dealer tranny swap, it's within a couple three hundred bucks well worth it IMO. Also, he does it while you wait and you can watch him do the whole thing (even have a beer if you want)

Let me know if you want any more info.

I got one of those "always ready to go to the river or lake, noisey, not a rocketship, workhorse" 7.3's, (1997 F350, CC) trans has 190,000 on it, had the banks stinger plus system put on in 1999, trans still shifts crisp, just thinking about getting it checked out, "they" say those trans start going out at around 200,000, any info?, do they start giving signs? where is your trans guy?, cost to go thru yours and miles on it? what was fords cost? thanks.

Anyone can pedal a bicycle, can you pedal a flat?????
