    Default No Sparky ! ?

I have a Sanger mini daycruiser with a 460 with a mallory magnetic breakerless ignition . The ditributor is a YLM567EV . The boat is new to me , but it is a 1972 . It was running good at about quarter throtle . At about half it would hessitate a little , and at about 3/4 it would run good , but sound like it had an exaust leak . Then I would turn it off for for about 5 minutes and it would run good at 1/4 throtle . The last time out I got towed in . When I checked for spark it seemed to have it , but then I checked again and nothing . Do the Mallory brakerless ignition modules go bad ? Can anybody help ?

These require a GOOD GROUND to work properly...

Yes they do but usually not intermintly. Before you go to the expense of replacing the module, check all the connections and wiring from the dash back to the coil and dist.

I was talking with someone the the other day with a similar problem. Turned out to be in the wire loom up behind the gunnel.

    Good luck

Well I checked the grounds and everything seems good . I'm feeling hopeless . My local parts store told me the breakerless ignition modules do'nt usely go out . Are there any motor heads in Grass Valley California that can help . Should I break down and get a new module ?

I think this is the key symptom...runs ok at 1/4 throttle but not 1/2. What kind of ign. coil are you running? That could be a prob. Can you hook up that coil to another vehicle or boat? Does the positive side have any kind of resistor or resistor wire? It should if the voltage is above 9 on the coil side. Any more than that and it'll fry the module in the dist. Mallory is nortorious for that. And are you sure there isn't also a carb problem too? With the way you say it runs, it sounds like that might be the case.

The coil is a mallory part no.29217 . I looked up some info on that coil and it said it is recommended for a points type dist. Their is a sticker on the coil that says not recommended for use with mallory htfire electronic ignition control system or any other aftermarket high inductive or cd ignition system . The coil is also connected to a ballast resister . When I bought the boat I found an old ballast resister in one of the storage pockets . At first I was thinking I was having some kind of carb problems . Do you think my module is fried ?

Coil could be the problem. Running the correct coil with a mallory unilite is another important thing. As far as the module...It doesn't sound to be toast YET otherwise, it likely wouldn't function at all. Typically, those things work or don't, no in between which makes me think it's either the wiring, connections, coil or something other than the module. Have you pulled the cap and inspected everything? You might also running try running a direct hot lead from a 12 volt source (through the ballast) with no other connections to the (+) side of the coil. Either way I'd get the right coil for that dist.

This would probably be better served in the tech forums
