I've done about a dozen removeable tongue trailer mods, and about 8 swing-away mods myself. I know the sleeved-removeable tongues are stronger,
but alot of people like the swing-away mods........

I've seen rollbar boats with swing away tongues going down the highway
and the whole front of the trailer looks like it's gonna break off... pretty scary
    looking...

lots of steel plating to "pinch" the swing-section is key...... it's alot easier to
make the sleeve tongue.... cut the frame rails to length.... make notches in
the main rails where you will bend them inward........

bend the main rails inboard. weld in the sleeve, plate the notches, and attach
a new crossbar at the end of the sleeve.

the only "special part needed is a quick-connect hydraulic brake like fitting
    and hose assembly......

having the ability to manually disconnect the brake line is also nice. think
    about backing uphill...........

I can do your trailer if you're near the bay area.

Thanks sherpa, alot of good info. Unfortunately I'm in s.e. michigan. if i was near you i would definetly be interested in you doing it. What should having the complete removable tongue conversion cost approximately?

I would love to do this as well. Is there a write up on it somewhere with step by step pics for ideas?

Like Sherpa said. Sleeve it then you can make it extend if you need the longer tongue. Like for shallow ramps and them winter days you take the boat out. You won't get wet.

Okay, I'm beginning to get my head around a sleeved trailer tongue and have a question. I assume you all use regular 2" sleeves like the sell at the trailer parts places and shown below.

Assuming this, what is the material you use for the stinger that slips into the sleeve? Standard 2" steel tube?

Or, is there something else out there that you all recommend instead of the standard 2" like shown above?

    Thanks a bunch............john

PS....this is a 21' Daytona trailer if that makes a difference.

John, I have a few pics of my removable tongue. My boat isn't here right now or I would go take some more but I think you'll get the idea. I cut the trailer so it would be even with the sponsons when I pull the tube.

Agreed. My preference would be removable. What size tubing is everyone using? The standard 2" square like those that I posted are something else.

Brian, those pics look great but the tubing looks bigger than 2". Thanks for posting. My crossmember is a bit different that yours as mine are shaped in a V but regardless, I really like what you did and may try to copy it. Thanks!

It's two inch ID. so I just went and bought a stick of two inch OD, welded a coupler on it then drilled a hole for a hitch pin. I think I'm bringing my boat home this weekend, I can take some more pics

    Good job on that rat

Horsepower determines how fast you hit the wall. Torque determines the size of the hole you make.

I used 3 1/2" square tube 3/16 wall for the part to weld into the trailer .
the tongue on my (hydro) trailer is 3" square , and slides out 14 feet long , (for shore launching ) , has the quick disconnect brake line also .

If you are interested let me know , ( I am really busy with work , but could take some pics in a few days ).......... Eric

Eric and Brian. Thanks so much for the info and any pictures you can share whenever it's convenient for you. I've talked to some others that are kicking around the idea as well so I'm certain your insight would be appreciated. Brian, my trailer is a little different than yours and might take some more work to copy it. There's another Daytona here at the moment getting some work done and his trailer is more like mine even though they're all Competitives. Must be a manufactuered date thing.

    Thanks again guys........john

I just bought a Fulton swing hitch deal from Shadow Trailers in Cypress for a bill. I'll be installing and refurbishing the entire trailer very soon. I'll post some pics of the install. We are completly removing the a-frame to make it break at the sponsons for maximum clearance. Can't wait to get my boat in the garage.
