For wood I would use fir, pre dill any mtg holes then a couple coats of thinned resin. Have found carpet made for bunks seems better for loading and unloading as well as longer lasting.

    Dave,
Thanks for the input, that is the direction I'm going, stainless steel hardware is also on my list. Really appreciate the help.

I did mine a couple years ago, I used the green board ( treated ) lumber. I had a hard time finding carpet like what was on it but the carpet store down the street let me have some left overs. stainless steel will gall, use galvanized hardware you wont have any problem.

Did mine last year. I used non-pressure treated as many people told me not to. Hit the wood w/ 3 coats of Thompsons. Bought the carpet from Rex Marine and attached with roofing nails.

I used rubber backed carpet runners from Home Depot with stainless staples.

I probably went over board but seems to be working.
Yellow Pine is actually stronger than Douglas Fir and not as prone to cracking
Predrilled, counter sunk holes and coated boards with a product called Alumnathene (sp)
Used stainless carriage bolts. You probably will not be able to remove the nuts any way if the boards begin to rot in time.
You can get real bunk carpet on line, precut if you chose.
Glued the carpet to the bunks on top side
Stapled the edges with stainless staples
Be sure to leave bottom open to allow water to drain out from between carpet and bunk.
