I am setting up a V-Drive for my brother-in-law and changed a few parts in his 10* slip case unit. What are the exceptable clearances on the top and bottom bearings? I have .017" on the top gear and .010" on the bottom. Nothing has changed on the bottom gear and bearing in the last 15 years. I removed a .030" case gasket and replace it with a new one the same thickness. I know that the most important setting is the lower gear because as the gear walks forward, it changes the spacing between the gears.
Also, is it best to change the spacers to achieve the desired clearance between the Bearing Seat and the spacer, or allow the spacer to be slightly higher than the seat and use .005" gaskets on the bearing retainer to set the clearance?
I now have a .733" top spacer and a .968" lower one. They seem like such odd numbers. It that the way they are available, or are they custom ordered that way?
