    Default Ski Hydro rudder question

Do you have to run a ‘’Sk’’ style rudder with a ski hydro? Most I’ve seen use them but I have seen a couple with a ‘’wedge’’ style rudder. Let’s hear some theories please..

the sk rudder pushes the nose down a little when you turn thats why they are used they dont turn good in the first place .

Tell us what you are trying to do with the boat...

You may want to PM Rick King...

Ok, first off I know this is a ski hydro and it has limitations, I’m not going to stuff a blown alky engine in it or anything, it will probably end up around 750 hp. I’m not planning on racing it. This will just be a fun lake boat but i want it to be safe. I would like to round up some parts when I see them and didn’t know if there was a reason for the rudders or not. I have a new wedge rudder that was left over from my old flat and wasn’t sure if I could use it on the hydro .

X2 On the SK....Last thing you want to be doing is pushing the nose down at any time in a hydro..
And X2 on "they don't turn good in the first place".
But in the second place..they will turn well if you want to work on it

Thanx for the help on my rudder deal..moved it to 7/8" offest right and it is almost hands off all the time. First time out was yesterday for 20min check ride...no high speed turns yet but i will probably take the 17 tooth drive sprocket off and go back to 13..the steering is that responsive...I did make some air traps...had no idea what they should look like...so i did 6"X 60"....A week after i made them i saw a Kurtis drag hydro at my neighbors house that were about the same deal.
My neighbor, Gary Kincaid has been a mountain of help getting my deal back together including getting the cam i got from Rick King (thanx much Rick, cam is exactly what i was looking for!) to clear cira 1970 11.0-1 trw pistons...that was so much fun i will neverdo that again
Thinking this deal might run 90 this time..What do you think?

    OP..what kind of hydro?

sometimes to take out steering torque move the bottom of the rudder foreward a little...< 3/8 of a inch. I have a 5-rib that I set up for a lake rocket..you would have to jockey the thing a lot to get it to turn. It kinda feels like driving a 2x4 on edge....here was my fix.
