Default First time out, have a few issues...

    Hi all,

Had the Stevens out for the first time today. (busted my hump for days getting it ready). Have a few questions to make it run the way I'd like.

1- The shaft log seems to be leaking too much. It has a grease nipple in it. Is this to pack with grease to slow the leak? From other boats it's known to have a bit of water come in. Is this the same case with this set up? (I didn't have a grease gun on board when on the lake...) See pic below...

2- When I hammer the throttle, it sounds/feels like the prop is slipping, or spinning a bit. Do I need a more aggressive pitch? I put a 3 blade on (and damn if I didn't look at the numbers first!) but I can get them in the morning. I have another 3 blade 12x16, but looks like the one I have on now is bigger...

3- When cruising (guessing 30 mph) there is a good hump of water off the rear of the boat. Can I adjust the cav plate to calm this hump down a bit? I will be pulling skiers and am thinking this will be intimidating.

    pics coming up...

    thanks!

Dont know how much power you have, but 12 X 16 is a pretty big prop. What is you v-drive gear ratio?

Regarding you "hump" (what hump? - Marty Feldman), sounds like the transom is sitting deep in the water. Some down pedal should help lift it.

When I bought the boat is was "supposed" to have 550 hp. I stick the 12x16 on tomorrow and see what it does. Not sure on the ratio, what's the quick and dirty way of checking with out taking the case apart (possible?).

Your probably right about the transom sitting low. No foot peddles, just a T handle. I'll play with that too...

    thanks,

As far as your gear ratio, you might get lucky and see a number stamped on it... It would read like 1.09 or 1.17, etc.... Not to say that I would trust that those are for sure the gears as they could have been replaced... I would mark the top shaft and bottom shaft.. Turn top (driveline) 10 revolutions and count how many revolutions the bottom (props haft) turned.. Get back to us with that number and we can help ya further...

I'm on it. I'll collect the data asap...

if the "hump" is prop wash from the center of the boat forget about it ...skier won't notice it at 75' off.
It may be OLD ,it may be Slow ... but at least it's MOBILE !!!

75'! Now you would be wasting a perfectly good v drive with that length of rope

We short line ski... typically 22 to 38 off. I'm sure the Hump won't matter, but if I can tune it out, then I'd like to make it as flat as possible back there...

Took the prop off, it was 12x15. Put a 12x16 on. We'll see what happens now...

Didn't get a chance to check the ratio yet, but it's on my things to do list.

22' is really short ... You might try at least 50' and you'll find you can gain more speed on the cross-over for some "air" across the wake. Also, it makes the skiers arc wider for a longer--quieter--ride.

The 12x15 prop is kind of a standard set up for a flat bottom ski boat. A quick and dirty check of the V-drive gears is as described above with the chalk lines but just turn it one turn on the top and see what you get on the bottom. It should be about 10% more and that would be 10% overdrive gears. But from one turn you will get an idea if it is over or under and a rough guess if it is 2% 10% 25%, you get the idea.
    Good luck.

Nicest wake I have ever slalomed behind was my flat... 28' off just a little bump... Try that behind my friends mastercraft your going at the great wall of china... hard on the knees! You will have no problem skiing behind that...

You log seal looks as mine does... uses a rubber lip seal and holds a phenolic bushing to guide the seal right? Anyways mine had a grease fitting... when I greased it, the grease got hot and fubar'd the bushing and seal.... I tapped the hole 1/8 npt and installed a fitting that ran water out the shaft log from the water pump... never ate another seal or bushing... thats what worked for me, maybe others have a better solution?

Also check the prop shaft for wear from the seal, cut the log hose a 1/4 inch shorter or so to move the seal to a good point on the shaft if you have too...

    (very hot...)

So I'm sweating my ass off and this is what I found...

Turning the engine over (by hand) hence the "very hot/sweating my ass off... for every 10 turns of the motor I get 11 and a bit out of the prop.

If I bar the engine over once (starting at 12 oclock) the prop will go around the clock and sit at 11 oclock or so.
