I still don't understand why you v-drive guys use these vs a bilge pump that you can run any time you need to?

Geez Shaun, because ALL flats are race boats, don't have alternators and run mags. Duh!

That's exactly why I've never understood these! I feel like they are a disaster waiting to happen. I was at the river a few years back and a guys boat was full of water, all he had was j-drains. He jumped in the boat and tried to fire it up, his buddy's had to hold the boat above water so he could get into the boat because his weight was seriously all it was going to take for it to go under. Luckily he got it fired and he went out cruised around for a bit and then put it on the trailer. I run 2 1000 GPH pumps in my boat!

Does this rule apply to all vdrives, because your doing pretty good with that pleasure boat of yours!

They are a disaster looking for a place to happen. If you don't check them everytime you get out of the boat, at somepoint you'll wish you did. The rubber also tends to distort in the presence of petroleum products and not seal.

We use a 2" diameter bail on a manual linkage. But if you forget to close it when you stop, the boat fills up FAST!

In a jet application , ( v bottom ) a bildge is ideal , but in a flat there will always be an inch or more when the bilge pump cavitates . There fore the j drain system i find to be the most useful . If your boat leaks , its best to try and correct ! I dont know any flat owners that dont babysit their boats while tie'd up . And always good practice of making sure there is no loose debris in the hull to hold the J drain open . As for GN 7 's manual deal , thats a freakin fantastic idea !
