    Default VD - Inspection Checklist

Now that I have run my newly-rebuilt-boat for about a season (almost) I am seeing things come loose and have to check and recheck things. The latest thing being my prop shaft moving out of the coupler about a 1/2" to my surprise and finding it AFTER my last boat trip.... oops! Yea that wouldnt have been a good thing to happen during those happy-face-fun-run videos....

So with all you guys doing racing and stuff you must have a checklist or something you go through to make sure everything on your V-DRIVE BOAT is good and well BEFORE making that next pass... or next outing....

anybody got a checklist they'd like to share???????? or do I need to re-invent the wheel?

if there isnt already one, please chime in and add to the checklist items that should be checked Regularly....

    Thanks and Happy Boating!

most importantly, prop shaft and sttering. I had a propshaft come loose on a flatty after a pass and it costed me my boat and almost me and my friends life.

    It's not that i don't care, I just dont give a sh!t!

Hey Paul, Before I go out I start at the front of the boat and check for loose steering cables, fread steering cables, cable locks, quadrent bolt, and the split collar under the dash on the steering rod and split collars on the Rudder. Also grease seals in Rudder stuffing box and check for play in Rudder. Then I check all the bolts down the stringers V- Drive and mounts, motor rails, motor plates, strut braces, strut bolts, cavitation plate bolts, prop nut, cotter pin, check play on strut bushing, and prop shaft split collar in front of strut. Check all cavitation hardware, loose turnbuckles and missing " E " clips. check t-tank hold down bolts, battery hold down, Header bolts, valve cover and intake bolts. Check V- Drive handle bolt, V-Drive coupler, Prop shaft split safety collar, Grease shaft log bushing,Drive shaft cover bolts, Skagg bolts, Seat bolts, and last but not least the steering wheel bolts. This seems like alot to check but it is worth the piece of mind to hammer the throttle and run it out the cove. After running your boat awhile you know what loosens up on your boat and should check after hard runs. It's a V-Drive Every thing rattles loose!! Safe Boating RACERICK

    Default Thanks

Thats a pretty comprehensive list - and very self explanatory. I put it into a checklist format for easy inspecting and documenting for record keeping of when and where shit goes wrong. See I figured all drag racers already did this.... everthing I always raced had a checklist of every nut and bolt that was maintained.

I'm pretty bad when it comes to tightening things.. I usually find the loose stuff in the shut down area and do the ol scratch the head routine trying to find out where it came from.. I've been trying to get into a habit of going thru the boat before we leave for Tech Inspection. We do inspect the prop, rudder, strut, cav plate hardware and steering after every pass..

you are more than welcome! I figured if it wasnt already out there, I would make it available.

After seeing what can loosen up in just a few 'basic outings' Its easy to see why things can go wrong real fast if youre not on top of these boats at all times. Mechanical problems can be controlled (to a certain extent) if you just check stuff out.

That sounds like me. Last trip out when my boat was back on the trailer, a friend asked what that "thing" sitting on the floor was. It was the split collar from the top of my rudder. Good thing I had 2 of them on there, one on top and one above the stuffer box.

Thanks for the list ptc. I NEEDED that. I think I'm going to go pull my seats and check some things right now.

So I had my boat out recently one more time after "checking everything" and I rechecked this prop shaft dealio.... and after just 5 or 6 good runs the shaft has move outwards again about 1/16". Is this normal? or do I have a shaft coupler issue? I have the 6 screw shaft coupler and its tight as I can get it with a regular allen wrench by hand.

can the clamping force be worn out or something???? or just time for a new one?

    This really bugs me.

The way I was told to do it was to remove the set screws that lock onto the shafts. Take a drill bit and drill just enough for the set screws to dig into the shafts and reinstall the set screws with a drop of red lock tight. It would take two freight trains to pull them apart at that point
