Alternator Mounts

What kind of alternator mounts work out good on a BBC? Home fab'd? Catalog companies? Let's see what you've got cuz I don't want to drill any extra holes anywhere or have a bulky bracket hanging off. Thanks.

Rex does have some trick stuff for doing the in-line with the crank deal.

All automotive deals will have the alt up high above the head. If you want it low (and yes you do) you will need to fab something up.

If you want the cheapist, this isn't it. If you want the best, here it is. It's from East Coast Auto Electric, very high quality, puts out 50 amps and is a true bolt on deal. This pic is from Retired Flatbottom Racer's boat (which is a true work of art). After seeing his, I picked up the same alternator for my boat. Belt stays on at 8k+ RPM, starts charging as soon as the boat's off idle and works with a motor plate without drilling a single additional hole.... check it out. I'll get some pics from the side this weekend.

I had to make something. All of my front mount bolts were spoken for with fuel pump and crank trigger. I'll see if I can take a pic. I used the engine plate for the pivot point and just braced it to the front of the head.

I've got a Rex alternator mount so it drives right on the end of the balancer.
Not a real good picture but this was from it's previous life in a jet,


It keeps the battery charged fine but doesn't start charging until about 1500 rpm because it's only turning crank speed.

I notched my front motor plate for alternator clearance. Made a spacer for in between plate and alternator tab, then used 2 rod ends for tension adjustment. I don't have any There is a pic on the cooling thread. I'll see if I can find a link.

Oh, I am with David.. East Coast Electronics is where it is at. I had a powermaster high dollar piece and it failed 3x. I have over 150 passes on the East Coast piece so far. (however the voltasge is showing a drop for a split second once or 2x a run now)

LOL, perfect example of Riolo's stuff. Different, well thought out, and expensive!! Dave was a fan of mags (maybe still is, haven't talked to him in a few years) so 18 amps output is adaquate. With today's CD based ignitions, electric fuel pumps, relays and controls, 20-30 amp draws are not uncommon. If you want your battery to keep up, your total load has to be less than the alternator output. If not you'll need to put the battery on a charger occasionally.

Catalog Brackets; Theres some real nice billet stuff available from Billet Specialties, Zoomies, Lokar, RPC, for low mount or high mount. many of these are for hot rod applications but will work on boats just fine. The coolest system I have found so far is a 2" cog belt setup for the low mount alt. made by Black Mountain Precision:

Im gunna take it out again soon and charge the heck out of the battery. Running MSD, electric fuel pump and electric tach. Picked up a Hunt mag but prolly wait till winter time and change things up. I'm hoping to find a decent bracket to mount the alternator. All the kits are nice but I already have a nice chrome unit sitting on the shelf. Thanks for all the info...if anything else is found please post it up.Daniel

Daniel, I sent you 6 pictures of my "custom, one of a kind" GM alt mount.... I'm not sure how the lower plate will work with front engine plate, but if it's 3/8ths thick you may be able to eliminate the lower portion of my design.... Let me know what you think...
