Default The Sanger Restoration has begun.

Okay boys and girls, it time to drain the bank account. This will be my first restoration, and there will be lots and lots of questions. I hope that all of you can help me thru this.

Here are some pics to start you off with.

First question is, in the 6th pic, you see the added wood that is glassed in, is the piece that goes from the stringer to the outside of the hull, factory.

Any comment, suggestions, or questions are always welcome.

    Thanks

That wood you refer to, are the seat mounts, could have been factory if they rigged the boat or installed by who ever rigged the boat and put the interiour in.

    Just my 2 cents.
    Good luck on the resto.

I patially agree with Terry regarding the seat mount framing. Looks to me like it also creates a bulkhead to firm up the gunwales. I'd be worried about the glass cracking at those points. Any spider cracking going on there?

Yes and no. The bulk head type is factory but these look like they have been replaced with thicker wood. The 2X4s didn't come stock with my Sanger. Good luck with the resto
Need help finding this 1973 Sanger 18'6" bubble deck mahogany bottom and stringers I was living in Pomona when I sold her in 1979. Just wonder if she still exists

yea what he said... mine has the cross braces too. The 2x4's look like they were added for seating or other purposes.

Glad to see another Sanger going together! enjoy

Looks like it could have been for back to back seating, cool boat. Do you know what model sanger it is?

At one point in time it does look like it had back to back seats in it. You can see in the 4th pic, where they rubed off the paint and dug into the glass.

    This is a 1974 Bubbledeck.

My '75 Bubbledeck has the cross pieces but not the longitudinal 2x4. My guess is that it was added later for seat mounting.

This is a stock 73' that I'm currently restoring. I believe they added the forward and aft 2" x 4"'s in yours. The original back to back bench seats
were lag bolted into the top of the stringers and cross supports. 1 thing you might check is for dry rot in those locations.
    Hope this helps!

Our 73 bubbledeck has 3 inch aluminum angles for seat mounts. Kind of like Rhinowoods pic, just a lil longer.

thanks for all the information. I now have a newbie question for you. In the last picture above showing the v-drive and shaft. My question is, what are the white things with the cotter pin thru them? I have seen a lot of pics of v-drives and have never noticed those before.

Shaft log seal or just prop shaft seal. They come in many different varities. Yours can be tightened (if leaking) by removing the cotter pin and giving it another half turn then replace the cotter pin. Other types use seals with a zirk fitting to fill with marine grade grease and some have a small fitting that allows dump water from the v-drive (cooling water) to exit the boat from there and keep the deal cool with water.

I've used a double seal dealio from Rex Marine that works well and DiMarco21 here sells another version.

Said another way......it keeps the water on the correct side of the hull..........
