How do we get a trailer title?

We bought a boat and trailer from a private party. He didn't have a title for the trailer, but the trailer was registered to the 3rd owner back, who bought it and got it registered through a dealer, but never got a title. The next two owners just kept renewing the registration in that guy's name without a title. We want a title in our name legally for the trailer. Nevada DMV says the trailer was never titled in Nevada so take a hike. The guy thought it might be from Utah, so we wrote to Utah DMV. They said it was never titled in Utah so take a hike. Isn't there someone who can find out what state the title is in from the vin#? Or do we have to go state by state asking each and every one separately? Also, how in the heck did the guy manage to register it in his name without a title???? Did the dealer he bought it from have a way to do that? They went out of business anyway, but I'm really curious!

If the trailer was registered it should show the VIN on the registration. Not all states require trailers under a certain size to be registgered. Here in Iowa the trailer under the cruiser went from having a Montana title to a Iowa Registration/proof of ownership. It is considered too small to title and as such the registration serves dual purpose. You need the old registration and that will tell you what state the boat is recorded in. If the registration is legally transfered to you, that along with a bill of sale should suffice to allow you to title it in your state. If the state where it was registered requires titles then a duplicate title just needs to be requested.

Plan B would be to register it as a homemade trailer and title it as such.
