Contemplating moving from CA to NC eventually and have noticed most houses in the Raleigh-Durham area seem to only have 2 car garages and 2 car driveways. Where do you guys store your boats in NC? Most houses seem to have fairly large lots. Do you store them on the lot somewhere in the open or in a shed?
For reference, I currently have a two car garage but my driveway is 3 cars wide so I have room for the boat.
I moved from CA to Lake Norman NC . when I first got here I moved into an apartment and kept the boat dry stacked at the local marina. It was $200/mo but it made using the boat so easy.
That was a good way to boat. Stored inside and I averaged using it a couple times a week -even if just for an hour and a tall boy after work. Only downside was trying to do any sort of maintenance there. I liked to clean the boat and vacuum water out of the hull after each use. It was a pain not having the boat near the garage.
I ended my apartment lease early when we bought a house that we couldn't pass up. Bringing the boat home helped justify the house payment and also make maintenance easier. I enjoy polishing on it as much as driving it. I killed the grass in my side yard, laid down 6 yards of DG, put a nice hillbilly circus tent on it from Costco and parked the boat there, out of the elements.
When shopping for homes, I was looking for a one with a useless room or spare bedroom behind the garage so I could knock a wall out and extend my garage parking on one side. My house has a two car but it backs up against kitchen on one side of the garage and master bath on the other. It's totally fine with being in the Costco shelter thing, for $200 and its fully encoded it's hard to beat. Not having the boat in the garage is kinda nice for other projects.
There's pros and cons, we have long summers here at the lake. We don't typically get snow in the winter but we do on occasion. I can't stand it when it's cold outside, but I make the best of it.
I miss in n out burger. The dining in general for fast food and moderately priced dinner type restaurants is lacking here. NC has no concept of Mexican food, we have Chipotle.. that's as good as it gets as far as Mexican food.
All in all, I'm in a clean neighborhood, nice house, have everything nearby, work is close by, and live right by the lake. I won't be going back to CA.
