Default Questions for the Lake Norman crew??

I may be moving to the Mooresville area soon.
and I've got a few questions for you locals.
Where is the best places on the lake to party?
"That is always the first question"
Next, what is a good area to live near or on the lake?
Looking for apartment or condo to rent on the lake.
How much is indoor boat storage? and what are good places?
What are the downsides if any to living there?

    Default Lkn

Looks like your boat will be fine out there, it's a big lake with alot of big boats.
The water is ok, the cops are pretty bad.Lots of kids in daddy's boat?
All areas are about the same up there, lots to chose from.
We have jet boats and its really hard to go there, its not to bad up by Brawley school rd in mooresville. We go to mt island lake witch is on the other side of the dam from Lake norman(LKN).We are going thru a little battle with the lake right now( see mt island lake fees), But as of now and for a while its fine.

Both have great landings,MIL water is cleaner, no gas or eating tho.Just a great place to have fun and can take the kids along.

If you want to see tits and a bunch of crazy people LKN is the place to be.
When you move check us out.Classic Hotboats in the groups.we have a few events in the area of LKN this year look us up.

    Later Nate

    Thanks Orange peel,

How about the availability of AV gas?
do any of the gas stations have it at the pumps?
How much do they get for indoor storage at the marinas?

there is no av gas for sale on the lake that I know of.

There is the lake Norman airpark.

    http://www.lakenormanairpark.org/

I kept a 21' boat in dry storage a few years back and it was about $1200 a year.

    Is it Summer yet?

I hope you've got time to read the ramblings I wrote....and it is subject to correction and/or argument, as I'm opinionated.....so here goes:

Though I'd have to ask if they'd sell to boaters, 100LL avgas is available at Lake Norman Airpark, and they have a key system, too I think...you'd think I'd be up on this since I'm off the end of the runway on the lake and used to keep a plane there...

Since we have alot of NASCAR affiliated residents, and the Mooresville Drag Strip, racing fuel is available at a few pumps around town, too.

If you decide to rent a condo (most likely) there's several complexes in the area- one of the nicer ones is called Davidson Landing, at Exit 30 off I-77 just north of Charlotte, and it's the next town south of Mooresville. There's dry storage nearby. There's a number of nice lakefront homes that can be rented, too, and all have docks or a space on a community dock, even some with lifts. If you're off the water, there's tons of places to rent that are close. Morningstar Marina on Perth Rd, Mooresville may have dry storage space available and has a decent reputation. There are several large real estate agencies in the area that could get you info on rentals- Keller Williams, Allen Tate, and others could help.

There are several good restaurants on the lake with docks for customers. They're spread out from north to south, mostly on the east side of the lake, or right on the main channel. Lake parties can have it tough sometimes because if they get too close to the residents while whoopin' it up, phone calls get made. There's a limit on how many boats can be in a float up, too. So head to the lake islands and hang there...or head up to the north end where the population density is less.

We're getting more and more hot boats here- like Peel said, Daddy's money, usually. Seeing stuff that I'd not ever seen here in the decades I've been in this area- American Offshore, DSB's, Eliminators, and other West Coast customs are showing up. The usual East Coast stuff like Fountains, Formulas, and Bajas abound. Liability insurance is recommended but not required; watch out for the lake lice. Age limit on jet ski drivers is 16 IIRC, and boaters license is required for those under 25, I think- it just went into effect. Eventually as all us old farts die off, everybody will have a boaters license and the lake will be a safe place to play.....of course.

    Downside to living here-
-Well, there's the street traffic- there's 10lbs trying to fit in a 5lb bag, so to speak.
-The lake can be very busy, especially on the South end on big weekends and holidays.
-Since we're a hydroelectric project first, and a flood control lake way down the list as second, water levels can fluctuate with the weather. Drought = bent props and/or closed ramps.
-The income taxes are the highest in the southeast- and ain't going down. -Sales taxes are 7.5 to 7.75% IIRC; Drivers licenses, tags for boats/cars/trucks all had fee increases recently.
-All motor vehicles require a $30 inspection annually, no pass=no tag.
-If you're property tax adverse, don't live in Mecklenburg County (Charlotte, Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson). Iredell (Mooresville) and Lincoln (Denver NC- on the west side) are cheaper by alot.
-Values on titled vehicles are calculated by NADA, etc. so be prepared.
-Schools are run better and have better reputations, too.
-We have humidity, mosquitoes, ticks in the grass, possums for roadkill, deer that have a death wish at 3am, water moccasins (snakes) here and there, and Yankees....

......We have quite a mix of transplants here- alot of Yankees from NY, Long Island, PA, and NJ are here, but the West Virginians led the way 30yrs earlier. More and more folks are coming from Cali and have told me they ain't goin' back, either.

Please, anybody, add to, or correct what I have here.

Pack yer bags and head this way- the more the merrier....

Right now you want to stay far away from anything on or connected to Brawley School road. It is a main road that ends up unto a peninsulla out into Lake Norman. They are changing it from 2 lanes to 4-5 lanes and that still probabloy isn't enough lanes for the population!!! North of Hwy 150 is way more desireable in my experience. Great place to live, work and play! There is a party island down near Marker 3. Pretty big hangout. Let me know if I can be of any more help! Lived on the lake now 25 years, so I am very familiar with it all. Steve

    Wow, thanks DaveA.
That is the kind of info I was looking for.
Well I accepted the job there yesterday so I will be coming there
soon. Hoping to be on the lake for the 4th.
Going to start looking for a place now so if anyone has any suggestions
please let me know. I will be working at Lowe's corp. in Mooresville.
I am 40 and single, so I don't want a big place, or one to far from town.
Just want to rent for the first year until I get a feel for the area.
But I also don't want to be in a load party apartments.
And definitely a dock for the weekends.
My biggest dilemma is what to do with the boat.
Dry storage "rack" or indoor storage on the trailer.
The rack places seem very hesitant to take a boat like mine.
But did find one that would. Crown landing.
Are there any storage units for boat / RV in the area?
Need at least a 12X40 foot one.
Well , I hope to meet you all soon!

I moved to Cornelius from Vegas 4 years ago, grew up in So. Cal and will never go back. It's a great place to live. We used our boat from April to October last year. The taxes in Mecklenburg are expensive for the area, but everything is still way less than back West. Our car insurance went down so much that we pay the same for 3 cars that we used to pay for 1. It's a little colder in the winter and a lot more humid in the summer, but you don't notice much if you're on the lake. Traffic definitely sucks at times and certain places, but overall it's damn good living here. Your boat would be perfect for Lake Norman, mine is a bit small for the busy weekends, but it's great for the smooth water during the week.

Good luck with the move and the job.
