Looks to me like mice were snacking on the boots on that cap. The top pic is where the wires USED to be. ???? I just dont see any mouse poo anywhere.

Don't know proper term, but is it the pressure relief on the bottom of a blower and it went thru the dizzy as it flew by it??

So far this is the most correct answer here.

The tie is that the old worn out distributor cap and wires got upgraded along with the rest of the engine.

Okay I will chime in and say first off that it looks like a bling-bling wiring harness and cross fired so bad that things started to fry! The pics don't give enough clue to get real! If I am right, What do I win??? just kidding on that but the cap shows it to me! M

Here is a wild ass guess. The old style points and condenser cap was to large to allow him to remove it with the cap on, or even remove the cap with wires intact. So, he ripped the out. And now it is either a crank trigger, or a small diameter 8570 dizzy.
    Just a guess.
