    OL GUY,
    Reading the post about broken valve springs, just wanted to know, how often should you start your boat in the down time or can you can you leave the mag off an d turn it over a couple of revolutions,I have CNC AFR heads with guide girdles, or do i need to start it and run it for a few moments, and how often should i change my springs and hardware, i was also told that the springs have memories is that true, or can i just loosen the whole assembly for the winter? Thanks O G

    Just loosen them off. And I normaly change springs every 2-3 seasons.
    Not old but starting to feel like it.

    Just put the motor together yesterday. Trying to fire it up next week. Going to the track this weekend so no time to play.

    Hey bad reaction,I personally don't believe in starting a motor for a short time then just shutting it off. That creates condinsation and so-on. Springs do have memory and if one valve is at max lift and another is at closed seat height it will create uneven spring pressures so after game over at the end of the year back them all off and forget it till hybernation is over!!!!!!!!!! As far as when to replace, losing top rpm will tell you that. springs do fatigue and the best way to feel that is by the seat of your'e pants and the tach. M

    If you ahve a truly high set of pressures on a long-lift cam (like the other thread), YEa, just back them all off for the off season.
    Part of the price to pay running that setup.

    I run a much lighter (but a lot heavier than stock), and after 3 years, had some head work done, springs checked as well, and they are just fine, so it depends on what you have in there and what it is being subjected to as well.

    Well, here's my experience with not backing off the rockers while in storage. When my best friend quit racing I bought up all his stuff, he had two running motors and I used one while the other one sat for 3 years and never rotated. So one day I decided to look into this motor, this had a Crane roller with 720 lift and all Crane parts but I don't know who made the springs for Crane at the time, anyhow I marked all the springs that were compressed from slight to fully compressed, all the springs that were fully relaxed mesured less than 5lbs from spec, the rest of them varried from 10 to 75lbs under spec and they were a new set of springs at the time, I think maybe 20 passes at most!.. Since then if the motor sits for more than a couple of weeks I back them off, after all what's 20 minutes to run the valves compared to replacing $400 worth of springs!...

    So does this mean when the lash caps fall out you dont just put them back in and keep going? lmao Something I saw done once and couldnt believe my eyes.
