K&N makes a series of USCG approved Filter/Flame Arrestor unit.

main difference is they paid to have them tested and the marine units carry have a certification number on them. Oh, and they are made of Stainless Steel.

I do not believe a flame arrestor has much if any filtering capability, other than stopping very large items from entering the intake system. On the other hand the K&N units are a true filter, plus a USCG approved flame arrestor, seems like a simple choice to me.

I raced NHRA Super Gas/Comp for 15 years and had K&N filters on all my motors, never hindered performance, and internals never showed any abnormal wear from grit on freshen ups.

Have a factory supplied K&N on my Mercury Racing HP500EFI, and will also have K&N's on the 565 going in my Cole.

Like my K&N, 4 years now.

If height is an issue (like mine is with a hood), all the USCG K&N's are flat-based, no droop like is available with the regular off-road K&N's.

I'm coming up empty handed, seems that the marine ones are 9" wide for a velocity stack. I need one 6 1/2 wide and say 3" tall. I may have to settle for an automotive one.

    I hid a 14"er under my hood.
