Damn cool old vid that I thought some of you "older" guys might like. Crank it up, make it full screen & enjoy.

Listen "kid", just because I can remember being at Lions when EJ Potter would run that SBC powered bike, or when the Magic Muffler Fiat puked its crankshaft on the start line, or may have even worked on the Willy's at 0:40 in the vid, doesn't mean I am old. It means I am "experienced"

Thanks for posting that. I "almost" remember that slut that stole my virginity now.

The Barn Job at 2:10 is a Vincent Black Shadow. An older friend had one. I rode it ONCE and that was enough, and I owned bikes all my life. But that thing was nuts. I think he still has it.

There is some crazy stuff in that video.

The pic in Isky's dyno room at 1:03, thats not a Chrysler Hemi. Its a blown Ford flathead with a Ardun conversion. Its one of the later engines that went into this car. Its the same Willy's in the vid at :040. In the video it isn't blown, so I am guessing it was an earlier shot. It got the blower around '65 or so. It was always a Ardun Overhead Ford. I think the guy in the backround is Sig Erson. The guy in the front looks like Wally Parks. Check the sweat on the guy in the backround. Think it didn't hot in the dyno rooms back then? So much for observed HP

Now look at the engine. The valve covers are wood. So is the intake manifold. I am guessing its tooling mock ups for castings.
Safeway Sandblasting owned 4 or 5 trucks and trailers that had 4 and 6-71 diesels driving compressors for sandblasting in the field, like homes. If you look at the blower you can still see the ledge running down the side of the blower under the mounting bolts. That ledge was used to mount the blower on its side on the side of a gimmie diesel engine. You just threw it up on the manifold and it would hang on the ledge while you installed the bolts. They would swipe a blower off one of the rigs, go racing, and replace it Monday morning.

That car sat around for about 5 years when they stopped racing it. I almost bought it less engine, but ended up buying a '36 Willys instead that I still have.

You should have bought that car!

I liked the '36 style Willys better. Still actually.

No, I didn't buy this one. I wish I did. This one is in the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn now. This is the car that made me decide to by the '36.

    Default Fubared......

That Magic Muffler pale purple Fiat, (all their cars were that same color of purple), starting line explosion is one of the most violent examples of FUBARing an engine, ever...

(The total disappearance of anything resembling an engine in the dragsters of Eddy Hill, twice, and Doug Herbert's that sent a mag up into the bleachers would be the most violent, and resulted in a limit of the "juice" (nitro), T/F & F/C teams could add)....I'm pretty sure Hill's second engine explosion/ disappearance that, I seem to recall, gave him a concussion from the explosion, was responsible for Eddy quitting drag racing. It may have even been his last pass ever....

But that magic Muffler car, WOW....Blowing the fricken crankshaft right out of the block. Just imagine what the look on the drivers face had to be as he looked down wondering what all the noise was about!!! I use to have a poster size picture of that explosion, and would buy another if I ran across one.... Imagine that in a circle boat at 100+!!!!

Yep, the "good ol' days" of Lions.... Hard to beat those memories of that legendary west coast track. The "air" at the beach is still touted as some of the best, even to this day....

The Magic Muffler deal was insane, but not all that violent. The nitro loads in a altered where never that high.
You're tight, Eddie Hills deal was probably the worst ever. I think it was worse than Herberts. It did give Eddie a concussion, and it fractured his back and yes, it ended his career.
