iron open chamber to aluminum closed chamber

    Default iron open chamber to aluminum closed chamber

    I just picked up a 454 long block that was in the process of a rebuild. Unfortunately the guy who started the rebuild is no longer with us and I have some figuring out what I am working with. I pulled the numbers off the cast iron heads and found that they are an open chamber head. I ordered some aluminum heads (closed chamber) prior to finding this out because I am new to all this and learning as I go. Hopefully not an expensive lesson. Anyways, after pulling the heads, the pistons that are in the motor are a flat top piston with L2377 030 stamped on the top of the piston. The aluminum heads are a closed chamber and my question is this: Am I able to use the closed chamber aluminum heads with these pistons and still have clearance so I wont bend any valves? Also I am guessing that the connecting rods are stock length. Any feed back would be greatly appreciated. Unfortunately I dont have deep pockets to just have someone build me a motor and am up for the challenge anyways and pretty excited about it. I have seen motors being put together and finally am able to put one together myself. Thanks again for any info in regards to this

    What exactly do you mean you "ordered" some aluminum closed chambered heads. From where, used off Ebay? GM made closed chambered alum heads for a VERY short period, and only on very early L88s as I remember. I don't know of any aftermarker closed chamber heads. What heads are these?

    The 2377 is a flat top piston. It can be used with any head. Open or closed. It might even make a little more power with the closed due to the compression increase. If you did in fact some how miraculously order closed chambered alum heads.

    Ordered bbc aluminum heads 320cc intake port, 115cc chamber, rectangle port from kmj performance. Someone asked if they were open or closed chamber and I don"t know because it hadnt said anything anywhere about open or closed chambers on the heads. Started researching on internet and found out I have open chamber heads on the block I bought and from what I can gather about the new heads is that they look to be closed chamber. Not 100% sure.

    The cast originals you removed were supposed to be around 119cc chamber, the new heads you ordered are as well open chambers. I would bet that if you cc'd the chambers that they would be larger than 115cc. Run'em. the comp difference with a couple cc's wont make a noticeable difference in performance although the performance increase from the heads may. Depends on the rest of the setup & the intended rpm range. You need to check piston to valve clearances regardless.
    Our resident cylinder head expert will be along shortly to correct me if I messed any of this up.

    if you got them from kmj I'm thinking procomp heads
