    Default 454 screw up

well i took the block to the little machine shop, and they actually did a good job!!! it was bored 30 over, it cleaned up good, then i got home and was taking the motor off the back of the truck, i have done this many times by myself, i use a wench, i put a chain through the mains and wench it up, well this time i only needed to lower the motor about 3 inches, maybe 4, i started to adjust the wench to lower it, and the chain to the wench [email protected]@#ing slipped!! the wench let the motor drop!!!! I was lucky not to drop it on my foot!, but then i looked at the motor and the chain ripped off the number 4 main cap!! i had it tight!!! it ripped a part of the main out with it,, heres a pic!! I am so pissed at myself!! the wench!! the concrete!!! I would say this is not repairable, well actually i dont think i would even want to repair this!!! fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

My only excuse is that I worked all night, had 3 hours of sleep, i had already lowered the motor about two feet, i only need about 3 inches like i said, i looked at the wench and it looked like it was set ok, then when i went to lower it, the wench just spun, i would have to take a pic of the wench so you guys could see what im talking about, its hard to explain when im so pissed offffffffffff

    Default Cast iron...

I've abused a lot of cast iron over the years and never seen anything like that!!! 3" drop, with a SLIPPING wench should not have done that even if the wench grabbed..... I'm betting you just dodged a huge bullet because that had to be cracked beforehand......
    Ray
PS I've had a MK IV BBC drop fully 6' on to concrete with zero damage and it landed on the mains at an angle......

That would depent on the length of the bolt in that hole. Longer the bolt, the more leverage it had when the block flipped to one side.

In the future Eddie, put on a main cap and feed a fan belt thru the main bore. The rubber won't hurt anything, and it makes a nice sling to put the hook in.

I might have wrote it wrong, but i needed to lower the block about three inches so it would line up with the engine stand, it actually fell about 3 feet, it hit the engine stand im guessing just right, the block went sideways and all the weight was on the #4 main, it just snapped it clean off!, i have never had this happen, i have dropped blocks on accident , but never had damage like this, also this is the same main that had all the crank dammage, when i pulled the motor apart, i dont know but I feel like a huge ASS, by the way the chain I use haa a rubber hose around it, or rubber covering whatever you want to call it, I could not even sleep last night I was so pissed, well I should have gone to sleep after work instead of doing this, but i just didnt want to leave the block in the back of my truck, i was worried that someone might steal my truck and i would lose the block also, (I use to be a cop, cant help thinking like that now) ohh well my fault or the wench? i havnt checked it yet , to pissed, then sad then pissed, 454's are hard to come by around here now so this really sucks.....maybe i will go to the 396,

ARRR! Blame it on the WENCH!

Our winches naaaer be slippin ya skally wags!

On a serious note, that sucks big time. Especially after laying out cash for machining.

I've always used a couple bolts in the decks and a chain across the lifter valley. The last time I had to put a short block on a stand, I was lucky to have a stand that was nearly identical in height to my Jeep Cherokee... came right out, no problem.

    (back to the pirate voice)
Better luck to ya in the futARRRR.
