Default BBC Head Gasket question ? HELP !!!

    Help !!

I have a GM 454 crate motor that has the following part numbers Block -- 14015445 Heads -- 6272990 From my research I determine it is a LS6 crate engine. My question is what is the correct Head gasket to use on this block and heads. Does anybody know the Fel-Pro part number for the correct head gasket. I am trying to get my Jet Boat engine together and can not find the correct head gasket. Thanks All for help.

    I don't think that came as a crate engine for a LS6 ?

LS6 was a closed chamber and the "990" heads are open chamber !

Head gaskets are the same though for both heads !

That part number will work if you want the performance set for a high compression engine! If it is a standard mild compression build the fel pro 8180pt-1 will work fine and is a standard shelf item at most parts stores. Mark

Open chambers were on the 71 LS motors. But they weren't 990 heads, they were 3994026 OC heads
    '70 LS6s had 3964292 CC heads

But there is always those exceptions:

6272990 Open 70-76 454 service replacement, used on some MKIV crate engines, 118cc chamber

I think the OC chambers were tossed on the '71 to get the C.R. down AND emissions. Certainly not for the HP gain because it lost a few in the deal.

On crate engines, again, I think the 990s were used because by that time the 990 head was about the only one still in production. Just a guess.
You would NEVER pass a NHRA SS inspection with a 990 head on your engine. I bet they were only used towards the end of the crate LS6 production.

There was a "marine LS 6" that came out of Tonawanda with 8.8 to 1 compression, small dome (roughly .125") forged pistons and the 990 heads.

When I was working at Gale Banks in the late 70's they would come in 50 or so at a time on steel racks of 3 or 4 engines. I want to say cost at the time was around $1200 each or something, had the marine high rise aluminum intake manifold too. Some of the lower horsepower turbo engines (600 HP) were these engines with just bolt on parts, pans, rocker arms, etc, and of course the Banks turbo kit.
